Stephen Stills duets with Judy Collins on her new album, Paradise
2010 | December 1 | more.com

With characteristic wit and honesty, Judy Collins recently talked to More.com about her new CD, which includes a memorable duet with her long-ago lover Stephen Stills...

On the new CD, the song you sing with Stephen Stills is so poignant-"Last Thing on My Mind." A lot of people can relate to its message of regret: "I could have loved you better/Didn't mean to be unkind/Don't you know that was the last thing on my mind."

Well, most people have broken up with somebody.

How did you choose this song to sing together?

He chose it. When I called him about singing on the CD, he said, "Oh, let's do Four Strong Winds." He always loved Ian and Sylvia-we did Someday Soon in 1968. But when he got to the recording session for Paradise-and it was really hard for him, he was rehearsing for the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame show, so he was very busy-but when he got there, he was humming Last Thing on My Mind. He had been trying to sell it to the other guys [in his group] for their album, and couldn't, so he sold it to me.

It's great that, considering your history, you are still friends.

We've seen each other off and on since the big breakup in 1968, talked over the years, spent time together. He and I had some things in common, certainly the music. That's a big part of it.

Listen to Last Thing on My Mind here.

An Evening With David Crosby
2010 | November 16 | broadwayworld.com

It's been twenty years since David Crosby last took the stage solo in Los Angeles. He ends that drought on Sunday, December 19th at the Avalon Hollywood in a show to benefit The Blank Theatre Company.

The company, formed in 1990, is dedicated to excellence and innovation in the theater arts, aiming to become Hollywood's first regional theater company. Noah Wyle (E.R.) is the group's artistic producer and vice chairman of the board while Debbie Reynolds, Tiffani Thiessen and Vanessa Williams are among those on the advisory board.

"My friend Noah Wyle took me to see a few of The Blank's shows. I was duly impressed by the quality of production and the daring nature of the work. Supporting The Blank is just one small way that I can help," David Crosby said.

"When David told me he wanted to play a benefit show for us, I was so touched that he felt inclined to respond to our work with his music. It is a rare and humbling honor for our organization," Noah Wyle added.

Tickets for the concert are on sale now, and priced at $250 (includes premium floor seating and exclusive after-show reception with David Crosby and Noah Wyle), $100, $75 and $50.

DECEMBER 1 UPDATE: Originally scheduled earlier in the month, this show has been rescheduled to Sunday, December 19th. All original tickets will be honored for new date. Tickets will be at Will Call. For ticketing questions about the rescheduled date call 323-871-8018.

Neil Young's warehouse fire started in hybrid car
2010 | November 17 | sfgate.com

A three-alarm fire that damaged a San Carlos warehouse containing memorabilia belonging to rocker Neil Young started in a vintage car that he had converted into a hybrid vehicle, authorities said Tuesday.

The Nov. 9 blaze was reported at 2:55 a.m. by security personnel at the warehouse Young rents at 593 Quarry Road west of Highway 101. Firefighters found flames shooting through the roof and doused the blaze within 15 minutes, authorities said.

An investigation determined that the fire started in a 1959 Lincoln Continental and spread to the warehouse. Young had outfitted the car with electric batteries and a biodiesel-powered generator as part of his company called LincVolt.

The company promotes the conversion of gas-guzzling cars into vehicles that run on alternative energy.

Young showed off his Lincoln at the 2008 Salesforce.com Dreamforce conference at San Francisco's Moscone Center, and earlier this month at the SEMA car show in Las Vegas. At 19 1/2 feet, the car was the longest one built in its era.

In a 2008 interview, Young said his dream was to inspire people to repower or retrofit their existing cars, increasing fuel efficiency and reducing the world's manufacturing footprint in the process. He had already converted two of his other cars, a Mercedes-Benz and a Hummer, to run on used vegetable oil.

Young said he bought his Lincoln in the East Bay "about 15 years ago, after it had been in a domestic dispute. The guy's wife had poured hydraulic fluid all over it."

For short trips, the converted car got around 40 mpg, compared with 9 or 10 for the original, gas-powered model, Young said.

The LincVolt had been severely damaged in the fire, the singer-songwriter said in a statement.

"We are still investigating the exact cause, although it appears to be an operator error that occurred in an untested part of the charging system," Young said. "We do know that the car has been operating perfectly for almost 2,000 miles and the system in question would not be in use while driving the car. We are investigating the components involved with plug-in charging."

Young also thanked the Belmont-San Carlos Fire Department for "doing a first-class job" in saving other items he stored at the warehouse.

Young kept guitars, paintings, vintage cars and cases of other memorabilia at the 10,000-square-foot warehouse. About 70 percent of the belongings have been salvaged or are salvageable, fire officials said.

The blaze caused at least $1 million in damage, authorities said.

Three-Alarm Fire Severely Damages Neil Young's Warehouse
2010 | November 9 | rollingstone.com

Building contained vintage cars, paintings and cases of guitars

A fire has destroyed part of Neil Young's warehouse in San Carlos, California, where he kept guitar cases, vintage cars, paintings and other artifacts. The fire at the 10,000 square-foot warehouse was reported at 2:55 AM, and by the time fire-fighters had put it out it had caused at least $1 million in damage. Officials estimate that 70 percent of the items in the warehouse were salvaged — though it's unclear how damaged they were. Arson is not suspected, and there is currently no official report on what was actually destroyed.

Local news clips show people from Young's staff salvaging items from the wreckage and moving them to an adjacent warehouse. A source who took a tour of two of Young's warehouses in San Carlos two years ago told Rolling Stone he observed numerous vintage cars, one room with video cassettes and another with video material — though he believed they were sturdy enough to withstand serious damage, and were possibly even fire-proof.

More Buffalo Springfield reunion shows on the way in 2011?
2010 | November 8 | latimes.com

Buffalo Springfield issued only three studio albums during the influential band’s short two years together from 1966-68: Buffalo Springfield, Buffalo Springfield Again and Last Time Around.

All indications going into the group’s reunion performances last month for Neil Young’s annual Bridge School benefit concerts in Northern California seemed to suggest that the operative album title for this latter-day get-together was going to be Last Time Around.

However, Buffalo Springfield Again might be the more fitting choice, as Pop & Hiss is hearing rumblings of some additional performances next year, possibly even a summer tour. (It wouldn't come as a big surprise to any of those who were on hand to witness the joy the group members appeared to be having being in one another's company once again.)

It had been 42 years since Neil Young, Stephen Stills and Richie Furay last performed together as Buffalo Springfield before they reunited for the Bridge School event, which benefits the Northern California institution that serves severely disabled students and their families. Young and his wife, Pegi, have been staging the annual benefits for 24 years now, and their son, Ben, has been a Bridge School student. (The other two original band members, bassist Bruce Palmer and drummer Dewey Martin, died in 2004 and 2009, respectively.)

Their set included such Springfield touchstone numbers as “Mr. Soul,” “Rock and Roll Woman,” “For What It’s Worth (Stop, Hey, What’s That Sound),” “Kind Woman,” “Bluebird,” “Go and Say Goodbye” and “Nowadays Clancy Can’t Even Sing.”

The 2010 edition of the band backstage (l-r): drummer Joe Vitale, who has played with Crosby, Stills and Nash; Stills; Furay; Young, and bassist Rick Rosas, who has played regularly with Young. Some have whimsically dubbed the reconstituted group “the new Eagles.”

Buffalo Springfield together again on Bridge bill
2010 | October 25 | sfgate.com and 4waysite.com

For a group from rock's Pleistocene era that managed only one real hit in the band's short life and haven't appeared together onstage in 43 years, Buffalo Springfield has always attracted an outsize degree of sentiment, largely because of its two famed alumni: Stephen Stills and Neil Young.

The three surviving original members - Stills, Young and Richie Furay - provided an emotional finale to Young's 24th annual Bridge School benefit concert Saturday at Mountain View's Shoreline Amphitheatre, but the bill was crowded with stunning performances from members of the little repertory company Young has put together for his clambake over the years.

James Raymond readies a recording of dad David Crosby’s songs
2010 | October 21 | pasadenaweekly.com

He heard a recording of me playing a few of his songs with my jazz quartet, Lit By Fireflies,” Raymond explains. “And he said, ‘Man, you should do a whole record of that. Not to sound like I’m tooting my own horn, but it would be really cool to hear you interpret my stuff.’ I thought it would be really cool to honor his music.

Considering the deep trove of rock classics Crosby’s written and recorded since the 1960s, there’s no shortage of material for Raymond to sift through. Much of Crosby’s solo work, as guitarist and composer, seems rife for jazz interpretation.
[His songs] really lend themselves to exploring,” Raymond agrees. “He’ll call himself a folkie or a folk-rocker, but he’s really got a jazz element that he’s not even aware of.

Raymond’s initial choices include “Guinnevere,” “Déjà Vu” and the Crosby-Joni Mitchell collaboration “Yvette in English.” He’s also considering more obscure tunes like “Low Down Payment,” “Naked in the Rain” and the mostly instrumental “Tamalpais High (At About 3).”

Neil Young unites with Elton John and Leon Russell
2010 | October 17 | 4waysite.com

When Neil Young was named 2010's Person of the Year, he was feted with performances of his songs by many artists—including Elton John, who sang "Helpless," accompanied by Leon Russell, Sheryl Crow, Neko Case and T-Bone Burnett.

On October 19 in the USA and October 25 in the UK, The Union will be released—a collabration between Elton John and Leon Russell. Young performed as a guest artist, as did Booker T. Jones, Brian Wilson and pedal steel wizard Robert Randolph.

In an interview on his website, John said,

"Neil Young and I have been friends since 1970/71 when he came over to the Royal Festival Hall. I had him back to my flat, where he played the whole of the Harvest record on the piano, which I'll never forget... We've been friends for quite a while. We don't see each other very much, but I asked him to sing on that and he did a fantastic job. That's probably one of my favorite tracks, 'Gone to Shiloh'."

In the UK, The Telegraph is currently streaming five tracks from The Union live on its website: "If It Wasn't For Bad," "Hey Ahab," "Gone To Shiloh," "When Love Is Dying" and "I Should Have Sent Roses."

In the USA, NPR Music is streaming the entire album live on its web site until October 19.

It's Buffalo Springfield again at Neil Young's Bridge School Benefit gig
2010 | September 15 | guardian.co.uk

Stephen Stills and Neil YoungSurviving members of Buffalo Springfield will reunite for a one-off benefit concert in California next month. Neil Young, Stephen Stills and Richie Furay will perform together in public for the first time in 42 years at Young's annual Bridge School Benefit gig in Mountain View.

It was 1968 that Buffalo Springfield last told an audience, "There's something happening here." The group split up after barely two years together but would act as a launch-pad for some of the era's biggest names.
Although members played together at Stills' home in July 1986, that was a private party and nothing similar has been attempted in public since the late 60s. With Young allegedly rejecting a tour, some of the band's less famous members were left to keep the flame alive as pseudo-tribute act Buffalo Springfield Revisited. The band's founding bassist, Bruce Palmer, died in 2004 and Dewey Martin, the drummer, passed away last year. It's not clear whether guitarist Jim Messina will join the rest for the October concert.

Buffalo Springfield at The Hollywood Bowl—1967—First Public Performance of Mr. Soul
2010 | September 14 | newstalgia.crooksandliars.com

April 29, 1967 - KHJ Appreciation Night at The Hollywood Bowl. Buffalo Springfield was the opening act with Brenda Holloway and The Seeds filling out the bill. Buffalo Springfield were just at the point of breaking into the charts. On this particular night, they premiered their latest single "Mr. Soul", a song that would later become something of an anthem for a lot of people, myself included. I remember seeing Buffalo Springfield play at my high school dance when I was a sophomore. A lot of bands did that at the time - it was good exposure and the audience was a sure bet. One of the bright sides of being a teenager in Los Angeles at the time.

One note - there is a good reason why this recording hasn't been reissued in any of the Springfield packages. The sound, although from the board, just isn't all that good. The vocals distort and there is a high-pitched electronic squeal throughout (which I spent hours getting rid of, thanks to ProTools!) But there's no way around distortion aside from trying to minimize it. Ultimately though, this is a historic, never-before-heard recording. An important document of a defining time in music. It's also a tribute to the work of Dewey Martin, whose drumming is a powerhouse standout on this track.

Neil Young Releasing New Disc, Le Noise, Next Month
2010 | August 20 | rollingstone.com

Neil Young has announced on Facebook that his new album will be called Le Noise, and that it will be released on CD, vinyl and iTunes on September 28th. In late November it will then become available on Blu-Ray, and in the form of an iPhone and iPad app. "The app will be free," Young wrote. "It gives you an interactive album cover. Forgive my use of the word 'album.' I am old school. When you buy the songs/movies from I- tunes they show up in your APP."

Young and producer Daniel Lanois recorded the album in a Los Angeles mansion earlier this year. "We cut a couple of solo acoustic songs, but the rest is very electric," Lanois told Rolling Stone last month. "There's no band, but I got in there with my sonics. There's nothing else out there like it." Young previewed many of the tracks on his recent solo theater tour. (Watch his performance of "Hitchhiker," at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville). Young first performed the autobiographical tune - which features a list of the drugs he has ingested over the decades - on the 1992 Harvest Moon tour.

Neil Young also took to the web recently to address negative fan comments on the popular Neil Young fansite Thrasher's Wheat. (The site’s commenters have complained about Young’s ticket prices, charity work with Tyson Foods, and that he hasn’t played with Crazy Horse for years.) "This is the most respected site on the net for this type of activity," Young wrote about Thrasher's Wheat on his own web site. "Let me take this opportunity to thank you for your interest in what I am doing,” he continued, addressing the site’s operators. “There is always negativity with any internet endeavour. Now it has perhaps worn you down. It is alright to say goodbye ... Whether you choose to continue or just hang it up and get on with your life is up to you.”

Neil Young Plans Gulf Coast Benefit Tour
2010 | August 12 | spin.com & finance.yahoo.com

Neil Young will hit the road for a short tour of the Gulf Coast this fall. His mission: to help cleanup the oil and the damage done.

For the four-date trek, the legendary singer-songwriter will team up with Tyson Foods to fight hunger in Gulf Coast communities affected by the oil spill. Tyson will donate 100,000 pounds of chicken products (that's 400,000 meals!) and Young is also asking concertgoers to bring non-perishable food items to the gigs. All donations will be given to the Bay Area Food Bank, which serves communities in Alabama, Florida, and Mississippi. In addition, concert-goers are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items, which will subsequently be given to the food bank. All proceeds from the sale of unique, limited edition Neil Young t-shirts, available only at the concerts, will also be donated to the food bank.

The hunger relief effort is the result of the long-standing friendship between Neil Young and John Tyson.

"Millions of people who live along the Gulf Coast struggle with hunger and the economic impact of the oil spill has only made matters worse," Young said. "I appreciate the willingness of John Tyson and his company to get involved by helping the regional food bank help feed those in need. We both encourage concertgoers to spend money locally and support local business."

"Neil and I have known each other for many years and both wanted to do something to help those whose livelihoods have been damaged by the oil spill," said Tyson. "We decided it made sense to combine Neil's widely-known musical talents with our company's ongoing commitment to hunger relief."

If Young's recent tour kickoff at Oakland's Fox Theater is any indication, the shows are not to be missed. The rocker played 17-song set including classics like "Tell Me Why," "Helpless," and "After the Gold Rush," plus five new songs off Twisted Road, his upcoming release with producer Daniel Lanois (Bob Dylan, U2).

Neil Young Tour Dates:
9/20, Panama City, FL (Marina Civic Center)
9/25, Biloxi, MS (IP Showroom)
9/26, Mobile, AL (Saenger Theatre)
9/28, Pensacola, FL (Saenger Theatre)

Additional Non-Gulf Coast Tour Dates
9/22, Clearwater, FL (Ruth Eckerd Hall)
9/23, Hollywood, FL (Seminole Hard Rock Casino)

Neil Young Preps New Studio Release and Box Set
2010 | July 30 | rttnews.com

Neil Young has finished up work on a new studio album with help from legendary producer Daniel Lanois. The currently untitled disc is set for release sometime this fall and according to Lanois, represents truly uncharted territory for the "Southern Man" rocker.

"We cut a couple of solo acoustic songs, but the rest is very electric. There's no band, but I got in there with my sonics. There's nothing else out there like it," Lanois tells Rolling Stone of the album.
The former U2 and Bob Dylan producer says that it was a surprise to hear from Young, and that the two have decided not only to record an album, but also shoot a documentary.

"He just called me out of the blue," Lanois says. "He said to me, 'I want to make an acoustic record. Will you film me and record me?' Apparently he saw some films I put on YouTube of my new band Black Dub and he really liked them."

In addition to his new studio set, Neil Young is also readying a new box set of archival recordings including at least three unreleased albums - 1975's Homegrown, 1977's Chrome Dreams and 1978's Oceanside-Countryside, as well as live recordings from his 1976 tour.

Neil Young Sideman Ben Keith Dies at 73
2010 | July 27 | rollingstone.com

Guitarist played on "Rockin' in the Free World," "Tonight's the Night," "Old Man," many more

On the full moon, the Thunder moon, the world lost one of the greatest musicians of all time. Ben was 73 years old the night he died on Broken Arrow Ranch in California, his happy home for the last years of his life. Ben played with Patsy Cline, Faron Young, Hawkshaw Hawkins, Ian Tyson and many other music greats. A great American, the quiet giant, he moved gently through the world, with kindness and grace.

My wife Pegi was lucky to share his last performance a few weeks back in San Francisco, where Ben was playing in her band, supporting her and lending his spirit to her every word as she sang her songs for us.

Of course, in Nashville Ben Keith is legendary, one of the last of the original country greats, the man behind the song. No one will ever fill his shoes. He has countless friends and admirers. They all miss him as much as I do. I will miss him every time I look to my side, remembering him, my brother and fellow traveler.

Thankfully, Ben's masterful playing can be seen and heard in two Johnathon Demme pictures: "Heart of Gold" and "Trunk Show," as well as countless great recordings over the last 50 years. We are so fortunate to have these as memories and lasting documents of his greatness and grace. He started out on a homemade steel guitar he fashioned himself from a piece of wood and left over parts. He loved his music and his life and cherished his many friends and soul mates.

He leaves behind his wonderful daughter Heidi, and his grandchildren who he loved so much, DJ, Rachel, James, Meredith, Aubrey, Fletcher and Caroline.

May he rest in Peace.
Neil Young

Much work has been done and there is much left to do. Using the template designed by the late Larry Johnson, the whole team is pushing forward.

Special thanks to audio engineers John Nowland, Tim Mulligan and the team at Redwood Digital for the unbelievable amount of work that has been accomplished so far. Volume 2 promises even more content than Volume 1, with many unreleased tracks.

Four unreleased albums from this period are being rebuilt and will be available in the NYA Special Release Series. Chrome Dreams, Homegrown and Oceanside-Countryside are the three unreleased studio albums. Also from this period is the unreleased Odeon-Budokan live recording produced by David Briggs and Tim Mulligan. These albums initially will be released in vinyl from analog masters as they originally were created for that format. So now is the time to get your new phonograph player. The new players, built with today's technology, are exceptionally good.

Neil Young's Greendale album now a graphic novel
2010 | June 20 | theprovince.com

What started as a Neil Young concept album and evolved into a movie of the same name, Greendale has been reborn in a new reincarnation -- a graphic novel.

The 160-page hardcover novel, released earlier this month through Vertigo Comics, was created by writer Joshua Dysart and artists Cliff Chiang and is aimed at more mature readers. The album Greendale, which was released in 2003 and runs nearly 80 minutes, explores the happenings of a small Californian town and its residents. The film version, which has Young credited as Bernard Shakey, was also released in 2003.

Collins' Paradise..... (with Stills)
2010 | June 2 | hemifran.com

The collection of songs selected for Judy Collins' latest project reinforces her lifelong commitment to quality songwriting and worldwide reputation as one of the finest interpretative singers in any genre. "Paradise" is a collection of songs with universal themes, desires, and cries of a human being searching for paradise here on earth. 10 heartfelt songs with tales to tell about finding love, losing love, personal freedom and redemption.

It's got 'Over The Rainbow', 'Diamonds & Rust' with Joan Baez, a beautiful new song by Jimmy Webb called 'Gauguin, an anti-war song by Amy Speace, which Judy says "is one of the best anti-war songs I've ever heard", and a duet with Stephen Stills.

"He and I recorded an old Tom Paxton-song, 'The Last Thing On My Mind' - We did it when he came to New York for the 'Rock'N'Roll Hall Of Fame' televison show, and he came up to my place and recorded it with me - Then I put more harmony on it, so it sounds like Collins, Stills & Collins. It's really good, very exciting!

Neil Young Unveils Five New Tracks Along “Twisted Road” Tour
2010 | May 29 | prefixmag.com

It was only ten days ago that Neil Young embarked upon his Twisted Road tour to promote his forthcoming, as yet untitled, release. Rumored to be produced by Daniel Lanois (Bob Dylan, U2, Peter Gabriel and Emmylou Harris), Young’s new work has been described by David Crosby as being “a very heartfelt record.” As the solo acoustic clips below demonstrate, Young is still at the top of his game, writing with poetic sagacity in the form of world-weary cautionary tales.

In the wake of the treacherous oil spill in the Gulf Coast, a war with no end in sight, and earthquakes ripping through the globe destroying entire communities, Young’s work seems more crucial now than ever. In “Peaceful Valley,” he asks: “Who will be the beacon in the night/Who will be the one to lead the nations/And protect Gods creations?”

Book Review: Neil Young: Long May You Run: The Illustrated History
2010 | May 22 | blogcritics.org

Although Jimmy McDonough's semi-official biography Shakey isn't in any danger of losing its position as the definitive account on the life and career of Neil Young anytime soon, there's a new arrival in the neighborhood that may be ready to challenge that classic for bragging rights.

Daniel Durchholz and Gary Graff's Long May You Run: The Illustrated History may not break any new ground in terms of telling the actual Neil Young story. But it does tell it well, and is often an easier, or at least more compact read than the opus that is Shakey.

Kent State Massacre Anniversary
2010 | May 4 | celebs.gather.com

Today, May 4, 2010, is the 40th anniversary of the Kent State Massacre, where four students were killed and more than 60 were wounded when the National Guard opened fire on Viet Nam protesters.

The Kent State Massacre resulted in thousands of protesters converging on Washington, DC, in defense of their rights and in honor of those killed by their own National Guard.

Allison Krause, Jeffery Miller, Sandra Scheuer and William Schroeder died in a matter of 13 seconds. Singer-songwriter Neil Young wrote the controversial song "Ohio" based on the Kent State Massacre. While his direct and open criticism of then President Richard Nixon was considered brave for the time, the song was banned on many radio stations. College campuses played it on their underground stations.

"Tin soldiers and Nixon coming ... Soldiers are gunning us down ... Four dead in Ohio."

You can read everything about the song "Ohio" in the section Behind the Songs.

Neil Young Hits the Studio With Producer Daniel Lanois

David Cosby tells Rolling Stone that Young is recording a new album with producer Daniel Lanois, best known for his work with U2 and Bob Dylan.

"Neil told me last week that he was having a great time talking music with him and just relating to him," David Crosby says, adding that he volunteered his services for any upcoming sessions. "I said to him, 'If you want a harmony, I'm volunteering.' He said, 'You know, if I need one you'll be the first guy I call.' "

Museum seeks Winnipeg Young memorabilia

OMEMEE, Ont. — The nerve of these people — claiming Neil Young as their own. But claim him indeed they do, on the basis that Young lived here as a kid from 1948 to 1955, and that his late dad Scott Young built a home just south of town where Neil still supposedly comes back to visit.

But claim him indeed they do, on the basis that Young lived here as a kid from 1948 to 1955, and that his late dad Scott Young built a home just south of town where Neil still supposedly comes back to visit.

Which brings us to the Youngtown Rock and Roll Museum, an eclectic collection of rock 'n' roll memorabilia in an old house of tiny rooms on the main drag. No, not Young's house. Neil lived in another house nearby and went to a school that's now gone.

According to a press release, the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer will debut several new, unrecorded songs on the trek, which kicks off May 18 in Albany, NY. The 13-city run ends June 7 in Dallas, and includes a pair of shows (6/1-2) in Nashville, TN, where Young recorded 2005's "Prairie Wind."

Last month, director Jonathan Demme's Young concert film, "Neil Young Trunk Show," debuted on US movie screens. The film documents a pair of performances shot over two nights at Philadelphia's Tower Theatre in 2007. The film will be released on Blu-Ray and DVD later this year.

Stephen Stills: Long May He Run
2010 | March 31 | hillcountrytimes.com

Stephen Stills is the only musician to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice in one year -- 1997 -- when he was honored as a founding member of the still-active Crosby, Stills & Nash and the long-defunct Buffalo Springfield.

But this veteran singer-songwriter didn't cite either group when recently asked how he thinks future generations might remember him.

"People will say: 'Wasn't he with ...? Oh, yeah, he played with Neil Young. Far out!' That's my guess," said Stills, who will be on the road from May through August with Crosby, Stills & Nash.

"I don't know how I'll be remembered. That's up to history, and we have no control over that," he continued. "(Winston) Churchill could have easily been remembered as 'that crazy drunk who started World War II,' but that's not the case. History has a way of leveling the playing field, so it's not something I think about."

What Stills, 65, does think about is music, especially now that he's two years past successful treatment for his prostate cancer.

Only "a few songs away" from completing his next solo album, he's also been working with longtime musical partners David Crosby and Graham Nash on a "new" album.

Why the qualification?

The album will feature stripped-down acoustic versions of classics by The Beatles, Allman Brothers Band and other classic-rock icons. The songs are being selected primarily by the album's producer, Rick Rubin, whose past credits range from Public Enemy and Metallica to the Dixie Chicks and Shakira. Agreeing with Rubin about what selections to record hasn't been easy.

"All four of us have to love a song, that's the rule," Stills said. "And when we resist, Rick gets a little impatient because ... he's Rick Rubin!"

A mini-retrospective of his career, Stills' solo shows feature songs from his days with Buffalo Springfield, Crosby, Stills & Nash and his solo career. Most of the melodies and lyrics are instantly familiar, although he sings them in conspicuously lower keys than in his younger years in a voice he candidly describes as sounding "foggy."

What differs from night to night, Stills stressed, are his guitar solos.

"I have a little bit of Neil (Young) in me," he said, referring to his on again/off again musical foil. "I want to do the stuff I want to do and put passion into it. I have a starting place for my solos and I know where I'm going to finish, but the rest is a surprise to me."

Neil Young Begins to Map Out Solo Acoustic Tour with Bert Jansch
2010 | March 23 | rollingstone.com

Information is just beginning to trickle out, but it looks like Neil Young is launching a solo acoustic American theater tour in May with Scottish folk legend Bert Jansch opening. Only five dates have been announced of what apparently is being billed as the Twisted Road tour, though many more are likely to come.

Young toured American theaters in the fall of 2007 with a half-solo-acoustic/half-full-band show. He last embarked on an entirely solo acoustic tour in 1999. His choice of opener Jansch is appropriate as Young has often cited the songwriter as one of his greatest influences. “Bert Jansch is on the same level as Jimi Hendrix,” Young said in 1992. “That first record of his is epic. It came from England, and I was especially taken by ‘The Needle of Death,’ such a beautiful and angry song. That guy was so good… And years later, on On the Beach, I wrote the melody of ‘Ambulance Blues’ by styling the guitar part completely on ‘Needle of Death.’ I wasn’t even aware of it, and someone else drew my attention to it.” In 2006 Young and Jansch played “Ambulance Blues” together at the Bridge School Benefit. Watch a very shakey video of the performance below.

Here are the known tour dates. Check the 4WaySite.com Tours page for updates.

May 26 – Louisville, KY, The Louisville Palace Theatre
May 29 – Atlanta, GA, Fox Theatre
May 30 – Spartanburg, SC, Spartanburg Mem Auditorium
June 1 – Nashville, TN, Ryman Auditorium
June 2 – Nashville, TN, Ryman Auditorium

New albums coming from The Hollies, CSN and CSNY?
2010 | March 22 | Johnny's Garden

Recently Graham Nash was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as part of The Hollies. When the group reunited on stage, it marked the first time in a decade that singer Allan Clarke performed. Graham said that Allan was nervous to take the stage at first but now, might even consider a Hollies tour.

“Well, I said, ‘Well, so much for not being able to sing,’ and he goes, ‘Yeah, I know.’ So who knows? I’ve got a couple of songs that he could definitely sing so who knows what’s going to happen.”

Meanwhile, Graham revealed he is still working on a covers album with David Crosby and Stephen Stills. He updated us on the Rick Rubin-produced effort.

“We recorded seven things and we love five of them. So we’re a little less than halfway through. When I go back, we’re gonna do about seven other songs then go into the studio and record them before we go on the road and we’ll see if we can finish the record. And if it gets finished then while we’re on the road, it will get mixed by Rick and his engineering staff and we’ll see what happens.”

As for some new music from Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Graham said Neil just approached him about it recently. “Neil wants to do a record. He told me a couple of days ago that he’s very interested in doing a new CSNY record and he wants us to sing on this new acoustic record that he’s doing right now.”

1974 CSNY tour DVD & 3 CD set Being Compiled for Release
2010 | March 22 | Johnny's Garden

Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young have been making music and performing live for over four decades, so they have plenty of live tracks that could be put onto a CD set. Graham Nash has said that he is working on compiling one such package write now.

“I just mixed 43 tracks from CSNY in 1974, our stadium tour, as we like to call it. And I chose the performances, I put them together kind of how the show went. Normally it was an electric set at first, intermission, an acoustic set and then the electric set. So there will be three CDs of music and a DVD.”

Nash said that if all goes well with the mixing process, the as-yet-untitled package will be out by Christmas.

Graham Nash talks with Rolling Stone about The Hollies' Hall of Fame Career
2010 | March 18 | rollingstone.com

Graham Nash is one of the few artists who has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice: first, in 1997, with Crosby, Stills and Nash and again at this week’s ceremony in New York, with his first band the Hollies. But when Rolling Stone sat down with Nash to discuss the induction, he seemed more ecstatic for his Hollies bandmate, Allan Clarke. “I was thrilled for my partner for all those years,” Nash says. “He’s been a very underestimated lead singer.”

Nash, a photography fanatic, also filled us in on his new book, Taking Aim: Unforgettable Rock & Roll Photographs, which compiles his picks for some of rock’s greatest pictures by photographers like Annie Leibovitz, Jim Marshall and Anton Corbijn into a handsome, hard-cover book. “I have a good eye for photography and I have a good ear for music, so if we could combine both of them, I could come up with an interesting journey,” says Nash. (The songwriter also curated a photo exhibition featuring many of those photographs at Seattle’s Experience Music Project, which is on view through May 23rd).

Nash also took a moment to discuss some of the back stories behind those photos, including the Henry Diltz picture that would later be used as the cover for CSN’s 1969 self-titled debut. (Check out the band’s track-by-track breakdown of the album here.) When the record was released, fans confused Nash with Crosby, since Crosby’s name appears directly above Nash on the album sleeve. “We’re all sitting in the wrong order because we decided to call ourselves Crosby, Stills and Nash,” says Nash. “It flows off the tongue better than any other combination. That’s why people keep calling me Crosby. They think I wrote ‘Guinevere.’ ”

The Hollies will miss Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony
2010 | March 13 | bbc.co.uk

The two remaining original members of pop group The Hollies are to miss the group's induction into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame in New York.

The group, who had more top 40 singles than the Beatles in the UK up to 1975, are being honoured alongside Abba, Genesis, The Stooges and Jimmy Cliff.

But drummer Bobby Elliott and guitarist Tony Hicks will not be there because the band are on tour in the UK.

They will be represented by former members Graham Nash and Allan Clarke.

"I wish them well and I hope they bring my award back in one piece," Elliott said.

Graham Nash says Entering the Rock Hall with the Hollies is Bigger than with CSN
2010 | March 11 | spinner.com

When Graham Nash and the rest of his Hollies bandmates are inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on March 15, Nash will join very select company -- 15 other artists, to be precise -- in entering the Rock Hall twice.

Even though Spinner kidded with the Manchester, England, native about this being no big deal, Nash assured them that, on the contrary, this is a huge occasion for him, one he could not be more excited about. In fact, it's partly because the harmony-rich Hollies, famous for '60s and '70s hits that include 'Bus Stop,' 'He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother' and 'Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress,' have waited 21 years since they were first eligible. Also, because of Nash's friendship with Hollies lead vocalist Allan Clarke, which dates back to very early childhood, he admitted the second induction is even more significant for him than when he joined his friends David Crosby and Stephen Stills of Crosby, Stills and Nash in being inducted in 1997.

As he prepared for his second time around, Nash spoke about the debt of gratitude he owes to Little Steven Van Zandt, why he doubted the Hollies would ever get to this point, and the prospect of playing with Maroon 5 at the induction ceremony.

While best known as a musician—Nash first became famous as a member of The Hollies during the mid-1960s, and went on to co-found Crosby, Stills, & Nash—he has also pursued a parallel career as a photographer, collector and digital imaging pioneer. In 1990, he co-founded Nash Editions, the first professional fine-art digital printmaking studio, with R. Mac Holbert.

2010 | February 22 | businesswire.com

Reprise Records Will Release Blu-Ray & DVD of the Concert Film Starring Neil Young and Directed by Jonathan Demme Later This Year

BURBANK, Calif. Neil Young Trunk Show — a concert film starring Neil Young — will be released on Blu-Ray and DVD by Reprise Records later this year. The film is the second in director Jonathan Demme’s planned trilogy about the legendary rocker. Demme also directed the 2006 Young documentary Heart of Gold. Following that film’s premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, Rolling Stone called it “an unconscious, raw, in-the-moment concert movie that respects the immediacy of creativity and the creator.”

Shot on hand-held HDCam, HDV, and Super-8mm cameras, Neil Young Trunk Show features scenes from two shows that Young performed at the historic Tower Theater in Upper Darby, PA, on his 2007 Chrome Dreams II theater tour. Fans are treated to acoustic and electric tracks that span his entire songbook, including rarely performed songs like “Mexico,” “Kansas,” and “The Sultan,” the classics “Cinnamon Girl,” “Cowgirl in the Sand,” and “After the Gold Rush,” and more recent work including “The Believer,” and an astonishing 20 minute version of “No Hidden Path.” The film also features some offstage and behind-the-scenes footage. Demme’s film credits include the Oscar-winning dramas Philadelphia and Silence of the Lambs, and the more recent Rachel Getting Married.

Melinda Newman of hitfix.com adds, "The movie played the festival circuit in 2009, including the Toronto International Film Festival and Woodstock (N.Y.) Film Festival. I interviewed Demme about Trunk Show, which highlights Young via raw footage captured mainly by handheld cameras, for a Variety story last fall. In that piece, he revealed that the DVD will include eight songs not included in the 82-minute theatrical version. “I’m hoping we’ll have some great moment in theaters, but I know full well this is a cable and DVD play,” he said."

TOUR KICKS OFF THIS SPRING IN THE U.S. FOLLOWED BY A JULY ITINERARY IN EUROPE AND A SECOND U.S. LEG IN LATE SUMMER

LOS ANGELES, Feb. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- The legendary trio Crosby, Stills & Nash (CSN)—David Crosby, Stephen Stills, and Graham Nash—will tour the western United States in late spring, followed by concerts across the U.K. and Europe this summer. Additional U.S. dates in late summer, following the group's return from Europe, will be announced in coming weeks.

The tour's first leg in the U.S. kicks off with a pair of festival dates in California: May 21 at the Sonoma Jazz Festival in Sonoma, CA, and May 23 at the Doheny State Beach Festival in Dana Point. Other highlights from the spring itinerary include two dates at Humphrey's in San Diego (May 25-26), Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, CO (June 2) the Dodge Theatre in Phoenix (May 29), Portland OR's Amphitheater at Clark County (June 11) and the Seattle area's Chateau Ste. Michelle Winery (June 12).

The tour's second leg commences in the U.K. on July 1 with a concert at The O2 in Dublin, Ireland. Other European highlights include two dates at London's Royal Albert Hall (July 3-4), Queen Elizabeth Auditorium in Antwerp, Belgium (July 9), The Olympia in Paris (July 12-13), and the Tollwood SommerFestival in Munich, Germany (July 25). Additional European dates will be announced shortly.

The group's 2010 touring schedule follows up a twelve-month period marked by a number of high profile performances and projects. Most recently, CSN was a featured part of the all-star tribute to Neil Young – their longtime partner in Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young – at NARAS' 2010 Person of the Year gala honoring Young that kicked off this year's Grammy® weekend festivities.

In October 2009, CSN played at historic Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 25th Anniversary concerts at Madison Square Garden in New York City. CSN was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997. David Crosby has also been previously inducted for The Byrds, and Stephen Stills with Buffalo Springfield; at this year's 2010 ceremony, Graham Nash will be dual-honored as well when The Hollies join the fold.

Also in 2009, David Crosby, Stephen Stills, and Graham Nash were inducted into the Songwriter's Hall of Fame at a June 18 ceremony in New York City. That same month marked Rhino Records' release of Demos. Featuring 12 previously unreleased tracks recorded between 1968 and 1971, Demos spotlights destined-to-be-classic songs later heard on CSN's group and solo titles.

CSN's music immediately became a cornerstone of rock 'n roll with the group's self-titled 1969 debut LP, now one of Rolling Stone's "500 Greatest Albums of All Time." That same year, they were honored with the Grammy award for Best New Artist. 1970's Deja Vu—another "500 Greatest"—followed, the first album from the group's four-man line-up with Neil Young (CSN&Y). Ever since—through changing times and various configurations—Crosby, Stills & Nash have continued to tour and record as "three together."

Vatican's Rock Top 10 Includes the Beatles, U2, Pink Floyd and... David Crosby
2010 | February 15 | National Catholic Reporter

VATICAN CITY -- The Vatican newspaper has come up with a "semi-serious" list of 10 essential rock and pop albums, including works by the Beatles, U2, Michael Jackson and Pink Floyd.

The list was offered in a tongue-in-cheek article Feb. 14 as an alternative to the music of Italy's biggest pop music festival, which was to begin two days later. The "10 albums worth taking to a desert island" were listed in the chronological order of their release. From 1971: If I Could Only Remember My Name by David Crosby.

Its songs used experimental musical forms to express an "existential fragility," the article said.

North alum still on odyssey to make ‘Easy Rider’ flick
2010 | February 14 | springfieldnewssun.com

The movie stars a few other recognizable faces — Sheree J. Wilson (of “Dallas” and “Walker, Texas Ranger” fame), character actor Rance Howard (Ron Howard’s dad) and Lauralee Bell (formerly of “The Young and the Restless”).

“How far this will spread, I don’t know,” Phil Pitzer said. “I don’t have a studio behind me. I don’t have a million dollars to throw at advertising.”

But above all, his movie is starting to sound like an “Easy Rider” movie.

“We don’t have big names or a big director,” he said, “but with big music, we can get where we need to be.”

The big coup? Stephen Stills recorded a new version of “Find the Cost of Freedom” specifically for use in the film.

Originally, the Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young song had been slated to be used in the fiery finale of the original “Easy Rider,” but didn’t make the final cut.

Be Yourself: A Tribute To Graham Nash's Songs For Beginners
2010 | February 10 | theconnextion.com

Legendary singer-songwriter Graham Nash's emotionally charged solo debut Songs For Beginners was first released in 1971 and came on the heels of a temporary split with his CSN band mates, David Crosby and Stephen Stills, and a permanent break with his then-love, Joni Mitchell. The album was a hit, climbing to #15 on the Billboard chart and introducing the now-classic songs "Military Madness," "Simple Man," "Used To Be A King," and the Top 40 single "Chicago." Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Graham Nash first rose to stardom with British Invasion hit-makers The Hollies. He went on to co-found the rock super groups Crosby, Stills & Nash and CSN&Y and remains active with both configurations. Throughout it all, Nash has pursued an acclaimed solo career, beginning with the 1971 gem Songs for Beginners. The songs from this classic have stood the almighty test of time and have been covered by a long list of music makers across the globe.

Now, flash forward to 2010, Nile Nash & Britt Govea of (((folkYEAH!))) presents have assembled an all-star line-up of contemporary music leaders such as Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, Robin Pecknold (of Fleet Foxes), Brendan Benson (of The Raconteurs), Vetiver, Alela Diane, Sleepy Sun, Mariee Sioux & Greg Weeks (from Espers), Port O Brien with The Papercuts, The Moore Brothers and Graham's own daughter, Nile Nash. All of these contemporary artists have come together to honor and celebrate Graham's first solo LP, Songs For Beginners. The artists put a unique spin on each song, making it his or her own while also honoring the timeless vibe of the original recordings. Some stay true to the arrangements that Graham and his Bay Area musician pals laid down in 1970, while others go for a completely fresh reinterpretation. Each track is sure to delight and introduce these already epic and timeless songs to a new generation of music lovers. This tribute LP, titled Be Yourself: A Tribute To Graham Nash's Songs For Beginners, will be released via Grass Roots Records in Spring 2010.

All of the songs on this inspired collection were recorded between May and October of 2009. A few selections from Graham's classic second solo release Wild Tales have also been recorded; Jonathan Rice handles "On The Line", Tyson Vogel (of Two Gallants) takes "Hey You (Looking At The Moon)" to another place, and Jonathan Wilson (of Chris Robinson's Wooden Family, Jenny Lewis, Elvis Costello) featuring an all-star Laurel Canyon line-up recreates the now-classic Wild Tales jam "And So It Goes (Music Gets You High)".

In order to maintain the righteous tone of the original record and to also continue Graham's lifelong commitment to educating our next generation, Graham, Nile, the artists, and Grass Roots Records are donating a portion of the proceeds from the record to Wavy Gravy's Camp Winnarainbow, www.campwinnarainbow.org. Through the use of music, acrobatics, games and production this circus and performing arts camp in the Mendocino woods of northern California teaches children and adults tools for building self-esteem, community, conflict resolution, communication and plain old merriment.

Be Yourself: A Tribute To Graham Nash's Songs For Beginners will be released on May 25th. A limited number 1000 editions of 180 gram vinyl will be pressed and will include a bonus 7 inch of the additional material. This will be available only through the Grassroots Records website, www.grassrootsrecordco.com. Pre-orders begin February 15th and will be fulfilled on a first come, first serve basis.

Grammys grouch Neil Young finally wins an award
2010 | February 1 | reuters.com

Neil Young, who has made no secret of his disdain for the Grammys, finally won a coveted trophy on Sunday for the first time in a career spanning almost 50 years.

Fittingly, the Canadian singer/songwriter was honored for a long-delayed boxed set collecting more than 120 tracks from his early days.

"Neil Young Archives Vol. 1 (1963-1972)" won the Grammy for best art direction on a boxed or special limited edition package. Young, 64, shared the award with fellow art directors Gary Burden and Jenice Heo.

"Thanks a lot, everybody," Young said, as he accepted his statuette.

Elton John helps honour Neil Young
2010 | February 1 | The Press Association

Elton John, James Taylor, Dave Matthews and more than a dozen other artists have performed 20 of Neil Young's most well-known songs in honour of his philanthropic work.

The star was sat in the audience during the performances marking him being named the MusiCares Person of the Year, which celebrates an artist's philanthropy each year as it raises funds for the music industry charity that provides financial, medical and personal assistance to artists in need.

Young has worked with Farm Aid and the Bridge School Concerts, which raise money to provide services for kids with severe speech and physical impairments.

Rock’s storied performers gather to honour Neil Young

LOS ANGELES — Rock music’s biggest stars turned up and turned on (musically) Friday to show Neil Young, in a raucous rock-concert serenade, that they believe Canada’s own rock/folk hero truly does have a heart of gold.
Canada’s iconic and uncompromising troubadour was named by Grammy producers as MusiCares 2010 Person of the Year for his many philanthropic endeavours and his profound musical influence.

Young’s former band member Stephen Stills of Buffalo Springfield was on hand, too.

After Crosby, Stills & Nash paid their respects and harmonized on "Human Highway," Young took a moment to acknowledge his friend and filmmaking collaborator Larry "L.A." Johnson, who died suddenly last week."It's a shame he couldn't be here," Young said. "But I'm gonna keep on going, and I hope you do too."

Honoree Neil Young fails to perform
2010 | January 30 | reuters.com

Ever the “fierce independent” and “iconoclast” — two phrases showered on honoree Neil Young at the music industry’s annual Grammy charity bash on Friday — the grizzled rocker failed to perform for the black-tie crowd who had turned out to salute him.

Organizers said it was only the third time in the 20-year history of the MusiCares dinner that an honoree had not sung, after Billy Joel in 2002 and Luciano Pavarotti in 1998. Young’s publicist did not return a call seeking comment. Young was never billed as a performer, but disappointed guests assumed the tireless road warrior might dust off a few ditties.

David Crosby added: “We made some of the best music of our lives with you, man.” CS&N covered “Human Highway,” and Stills teamed with Crow for “Long May You Run.”

Neil Young's heart of gold is being rewarded at this year's Grammys
2010 | January 28 | lfpress.com

The Canadian folk-rock icon has been named 2010 MusiCares Person of the Year in recognition of both his artistic achievements and his philanthropic work for charities such as Farm Aid and the Bridge School for children with special needs.

Young will be honoured Friday night with a gala dinner and an award presentation, followed by a star-studded tribute concert featuring (in alphabetical order) Jack Black, Jackson Browne, T Bone Burnett, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Sheryl Crow, Everest, Patty Griffin, Josh Groban, Ben Harper, Emmylou Harris, Elton John, Norah Jones, Lady Antebellum, k.d. lang, Dave Matthews, John Mellencamp, Ozomatli, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Leon Russell, James Taylor, Wilco and Lucinda Williams.

"I'm more excited about that, to be completely honest with you, than the Grammys," enthused Lady Antebellum vocalist Charles Kelley, whose Nashville trio is up for two awards Sunday night thanks to their hit single 'I Run to You.' "I have no idea how we got invited, but it's a huge honour and I can't wait. In my old cover-band days we used to play 'Southern Man' and 'Keep on Rockin' in the Free World.'

"We're getting to perform 'Only Love Can Break Your Heart'," he said. "I wanted to do 'Helpless' so bad, but I think they said Elton John was going to do it, so I'm not going to argue against that!"

Wilco bassist John Stirratt didn't want to give out any spoilers about what the Chicago alt-rockers will play, but he wasn't shy about discussing Young's impact on the band.

"Had he not picked up a guitar and made music, we would not be around," said Stirratt. Wilco's eponymous CD Wilco (The Album) is up for Americana Album of the Year, but he says honouring Young is "the main reason" they're going to L.A.

"Boy, does he deserve this -- if only for all the work he puts in every year on the Bridge School Shows. You know how annual events are; they come around so fast. But they're so nice in how they treat the artists, and they have a big party out at their house."

Now, he just has to forget the fact that he has to play Neil Young songs in front of the man himself.

"You know, I never really thought about that until you mentioned it. That's going to be brutal. Thanks a lot."

Conan O'Brien ended his short-lived gig as host of NBC's "Tonight Show" on Friday night (Jan. 22), and the comedian went out with a star-studded episode that featured two memorable musical numbers.

First, O'Brien brought out special guest Neil Young for a moving performance of "Long May You Run." O'Brien mentioned that Young was the first person to call him and show support when his troubles with NBC and Jay Leno first started just two weeks ago.

Fans of "Late Night" with Conan O'Brien may remember that Neil Young appeared on the show for four consecutive nights in early November 2005.

Stephen Stills Promises 'Startling' Finds From His Archives
2010 | January 13 | spinner.com

From Buffalo Springfield to Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, Stephen Stills and Neil Young have been associated in the annals of music for four decades. Even after having successful solo careers, the two remain linked to many music fans. So now that Young finally released his massive career archives, his good friend Stills is using that as inspiration.

"Neil has been going through his whole life's recording and it's a big to-do," Stills tells Spinner. "And yes, it did inspire me conceptually in it's something an artist that's lived as long as I have and don't intend to be going anywhere soon should do."

What kind of anthology are we looking at here? "I'm talking about everything from my first tape of the 'Voice of America' in Costa Rica when I was about 13 or 15 to the latest thing I cut," he says. "This process takes forever because I've got a room the size of a bus full of tapes of outtakes and jams."

For music enthusiasts and Stills devotees, the words "outtakes" and "jams" are very promising. Does that mean there are some exciting finds in there? "Hell yes, because I found some startling stuff," he says. "Neil just found a bunch of startling stuff from the Stills/Young band. It's gotta be a surprise because I found things that I thought were gonna be great and I put on this tape and it's like 30 minutes of people trying to think of something, giggling and laughing. Then there's another one where I'm warming up to do a guitar solo and the tape's running and it's spectacular guitar playing that needs to be a new song. So yes. I found lots of surprises and some disappointments too."

With Stills planning on releasing his archives and Young promising more where will the Stills/Young stuff end up? "If it was on both, considering the volume of Neil's boxes, I don't think it matters. We might call each other and say, 'This is your song, you should have this,'" he says. "We do have that relationship. But it's a safe bet some of them would end up on both."

CSN: recording resumes; summer tour in the works
2010 | January 12 | livedaily.com

Crosby, Stills & Nash have resumed work on an album of covers with producer Rick Rubin. The trio already has seven tracks in the can and expects to record another dozen tunes. Rehearsals for the remaining songs begin this week.

The album, announced 11 months ago, is not expected to be released until at least the fourth quarter of this year. It will likely have about 14 tracks; among the keepers so far are versions of Gregg Allman's "Midnight Rider" and Bob Dylan's "Girl From North Country." It will be their first studio album since the 1999 release by CSNY, "Looking Forward."

Before the album is released, however, CSN will again embark on a summer tour. The group, sans occasional partner Neil Young, will perform in North America in June and then travel to Europe for six weeks. Upon returning home, they expect to tour the US for another month.

They did a similar run last year, playing North America in early June and then August through September, with shows in Europe in late June and July.
