From Thrasherswheat:
Last month, Neil Young took questions from fans on Twitter and it
was quite amusing. As we all know, Neil Young is considered to be a
"Social Networking Genius" who has always been ahead of the curve
while behind the 8 ball.
Neil's last Twitter session made some news and seems to have been a
huge hit in the Twitter-verse. At one point, the hashtag #AskNeil
trended up to the #2 position.
Now comes word that
Neil Young will do a Book Club Twitter Chat, sponsored by Blue Rider
Press and Penguin Online, on Wednesday, the 28th of November, 7:30
pm - 8:30 pm (ET), when he will be taking questions about Waging
Heavy Peace. To participate and for updates, follow @BlueRiderPress,

Stills Breaks Silence on Short-Lived Buffalo Springfield Reunion 2012 |
November 6

As
Rolling Stone has previously reported, Buffalo Springfield were
originally slated for a 30-date reunion tour this year – until Neil
Young decided to devote his attention to a new project with Crazy Horse.
"I'd be on a tour of my past for the rest of fucking time," Young said
in June. "I have to be able to move forward. I can't be relegated. I did
enough of it for right then."
In a new interview with Rolling Stone, Stephen Stills breaks his silence
about the aborted Buffalo Springfield reunion.

Neil Young's Entire Twitter Q&A

Neil Young recently registered a Twitter account to promote his
forthcoming album with Crazy Horse, Psychedelic Pill. As you might
have guessed, the legendary Canadian rocker isn’t one to tweet about
his eating habits or what he thinks about the election, but he did
participate in a Q&A with his followers yesterday.
Young’s answers were almost comically sparse, but the Q&A session
did give fans an insight into possible upcoming tour plans while at
the same time showcasing Young’s wry sense of humor.

Neil Young & Crazy
Horse Release 17-Minute Video for Epic New Song
2012 | October 14 |
ultimateclassicrock.com
It won’t be out until
the end of the month, but Neil Young isn’t waiting until Oct. 30 to
start premiering music from Psychedelic Pill, his new album
with Crazy Horse — in fact, he’s just released a video for one of
the record’s longest tracks, ‘Ramada Inn.’
Weighing in at a hefty 16 minutes and 49 seconds, ‘Inn’ finds Young
and Crazy Horse laying out and digging in to tell the story of a
marriage on the verge of collapse — but it’s only the second-longest
track on the record, which also includes the nearly half-hour
‘Driftin’ Back’ as well as ‘Walk Like a Giant,’ which is nearly as
long as ‘Ramada Inn.’
Those are some pretty impressive running times, but they shouldn’t
come as any surprise to Young fans, who know how comfortably he and
Crazy Horse can settle into a groove — nine of the 10 songs on their
last album together, 2003′s Greendale, crossed the
five-minute mark, and three of those were longer than 10 minutes.
Clearly, Neil and the guys came to play with ‘Psychedelic Pill’;
check out the video for ‘Ramada Inn’ below, and let us know if
you’re excited to hear the rest of the record.

Following His Father's Footsteps: Neil Young Writes 1st Book
2012 | October 6 |
winnipegfreepress.com
He
generally avoids specific talk about songwriting. Yet he candidly
admits that his song "Alabama," a trigger for Lynyrd Skynyrd's
answer "Sweet Home Alabama," was ill-advised. Young's passions — his
family, electric trains, cars and a system to sonically improve
digital music files — get as much space as music.
"If you hang out with somebody, the conversation doesn't always run
out in a linear fashion, from A to B," he said. "It's what's on
their minds. Things happen. You see things out the window, you get
interested in that. You get distracted by things. I always thought
that was a natural way to go with it.".

Young Expands Pono Digital-to-Analog Music Service
2012 | September
27 | rollingstone.com
Beginning next year, Pono will release a line of portable players, a
music-download service and digital-to-analog conversion technology
intended to present songs as they first sound during studio recording
sessions. In his book out this week, Waging Heavy Peace, Young writes
that Pono will help unite record companies with cloud storage "to save
the sound of music." As Flea raves to Rolling Stone, "It's not like some
vague thing that you need dogs' ears to hear. It's a drastic
difference."
While Young acknowledges in his book that existing digital purchases
will play on Pono devices, he points out that his service "will force
iTunes to be better and to improve quality at a faster pace."
"His reasons are so not based in commerce, and based in just the desire
for people to really feel the uplifting spirit of music," Flea said in
defense of Young. "MP3s suck. It's just a shadow of the music."

Neil Young
Autobiography Waging Heavy Peace Out Today
2012 | September
25 | 4waysite.com
For the first time Neil Young offers a kaleidoscopic view
of his personal life and musical creativity. He tells of his
childhood in Ontario, where his father instilled in him a love for
the written word; his first brush with mortality when he contracted
polio at the age of five; struggling to pay rent during his early
days with the Squires; traveling the Canadian prairies in Mort, his
1948 Buick hearse; performing in a remote town as a polar bear
prowled beneath the floorboards; leaving Canada on a whim in 1966 to
pursue his musical dreams in the pot-filled boulevards and communal
canyons of Los Angeles; the brief but influential life of Buffalo
Springfield, which formed almost immediately after his arrival in
California.
He recounts their rapid rise to fame and ultimate break-up; going
solo and overcoming his fear of singing alone; forming Crazy Horse
and writing “Cinnamon Girl,” “Cowgirl in the Sand,” and “Down by the
River” in one day while sick with the flu; joining Crosby, Stills &
Nash, recording the landmark CSNY album, Déjà vu, and writing
the song, “Ohio;” life at his secluded ranch in the redwoods of
Northern California and the pot-filled jam sessions there; falling
in love with his wife, Pegi, and the birth of his three children;
and finally, finding the contemplative paradise of Hawaii.
Astoundingly candid, witty, and as uncompromising and true as his
music, Waging Heavy Peace is Neil Young’s journey as only he can
tell it.

Add Fifth And Final Show
2012 | September
17 | crosbystillsnash.com
With four shows at New York City’s Beacon Theatre near sell out,
Crosby, Stills & Nash (CSN) have added a fifth and final date,
October 22, to its four night run (Oct, 16, 17, 19, 20) at the venue
next month. The show also marks the conclusion of CSN’s extensive
2012 world tour, which comprised more than 80 dates in the U.S.,
Australia, New Zealand, and South America. For its second,
tour-closing set on October 22, CSN will perform its classic 1969
debut album, Crosby, Stills & Nash, in its entirety—with songs
including “Suite: Judy Blue Eyes,” “Marrakesh Express” and “Guinnevere.”
It’s the first time the band has ever performed a full album on
stage. CSN website members will have access to pre-sale tickets for
the final Beacon Theatre show on Thursday, September 20 before the
public on sale on September 21st.
“We’ve had an incredible time on the road this year,” says Graham
Nash. “We can’t think of a better way to honor the end of our 2012
tour, than playing our first album as the last set of our final
show.” The tour kicked off in January, and has drawn capacity crowds
and enthusiastic reviews. Writing for MSN Music, Mark Brown noted,
“At Red Rocks in Colorado on August 21, CSN absolutely killed it.
Every song. No lulls. No filler … It’s hard to believe that any band
in 2012 would be putting on better shows than it did in 1969, but
CSN did just that.”

But there has never been a tribute to the collective work of Crosby,
Stills, Nash & Young.
Until now!
On October 15th, 2012, Sweden's Hemifrån and Italy's Route 61 Music

Stills' former girlfriend Judy Collins and daughter Jennifer Stills,

Sonny Mone from Crazy Horse, David Crosby's guitarist Marcus Eaton
and vocal favorites Venice), but also some cool names from the 70's

interesting names from the 80's (Sid Griffin from Long Ryders, Ian
McNabb from Icicle Works, Liam O'Maonlai from Hothouse Flowers,
Steve Wynn from Dream Syndicate), as well as some new-up-and-coming
names from the alt country scene in the U.S. (Clarence Bucaro, Neal

Neil Young and Crazy Horse Reveal Album Release Date, Tracklist
2012 | September
11 | rollingstone.com
Neil Young and Crazy
Horse have given Psychedelic Pill, their second album of
2012, an official release date of October 30th.
With a handful of tracks passing the 15-minute barrier, and opener "Driftin'
Back" clocking in at a whopping 27 minutes and 36 seconds, the
followup to their folk covers record Americana will be available in
double-CD and triple-LP formats. Check out the full tracklist below.
"It's us jamming and having lots of fun," Crazy Horse guitarist
Frank "Poncho" Sampedro told Rolling Stone earlier this summer. "I
think that [former Crazy Horse producer] David Briggs would be proud
of it . . . Once he was gone, I felt like we lost our compass a bit.
We had the sound and we had the big machine, and we could play
anything and play pretty good, but we weren't putting any great
records together. I mean, Broken Arrow was OK. It wasn't like
Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere or Rust Never Sleeps or Ragged
Glory."
Produced by Neil Young with John Hanlon and Mark Humphreys,
Psychedelic Pill is the first album of original material by the
full line-up of Neil Young and Crazy Horse since Broken Arrow in
1996 – though the band (minus Poncho) did back Young on his 2003
rock opera Greendale.
The band resumes their 2012 tour on October 3rd in Windsor, Ontario.
It wraps up December 4th in Bridgeport, Connecticut.
Track
list:
Disc One:
1) Driftin' Back (27:36)
2) Psychedelic Pill (3:26)
3) Ramada Inn (16:49)
4) Born in Ontario (3:49)
Disc Two:
1) Twisted Road (3:28)
2) She's Always Dancing (8:33)
3) For the Love of Man (4:13)
4) Walk Like a Giant (16:27)

5) Psychedelic Pill (Alternate Mix)

Young Unveils New Songs
2012 | August 22 | blindedbysound.com
Rumor has it Neil
and the Horse will release a new studio CD in September and they
played five new songs over two nights at Red Rocks, maybe to appease
the muse gods and goddesses for the downright abysmal recent covers
release Americana. Each performance, while using the same
material, was unbridled ecstasy for any Neil fan comprising songs
from nearly each of his best periods and, yes, there is a new anthem
among the new material performed over two nights.
Neil is so good at writing in the third person even on his darkest,
most personal songs that sometimes it is hard to tell when he is
reflecting on his own life, a character he just created, or someone
he knows. On the five as-yet unreleased songs he played each night,
he leaves no doubt about the inspiration of the lyrics and there is
no doubt that this will be his most personal release since On the
Beach.

Nash Debuts New Photo Assemblages at "This Could Be You"
2012 | August 21 | prnewswire.com
Nash's latest
exhibition of photography, "This Could Be You," opens September 1 at
Santa Monica's
Gallery 169. There will be an artist's reception from 5-8PM.
Widely known as an
activist in support of causes related to social justice, peace,
environmental stewardship, and progressive politics, Nash addresses
these issues in the twelve (12) previously un-exhibited, large
format photo assemblages comprising "This Could Be You," also the
title of one of the works. Each hand-embellished mixed-media piece
examines and questions contemporary political events and societal
mores.
"I believe that
knowledge is power, that information and ideas are vital to our very
survival, that our many problems should be faced, and can be dealt
with," says Nash. "As an artist, I need to reflect my concerns
regarding certain aspects of society facing me today. I want to
express my personal opinions about what goes on around me. My intent
is not to alienate, but to engage. No one has to agree with me, but
let's keep an open mind. After all, this could be you."

Crosby Pens Jerry Garcia Birthday Poem
2012 | August 2 | sfgate.com
David Crosby has
marked what would have been pal Jerry Garcia’s 70th birthday with a
poem.
The rocker will read Cause I’m Missing Jerry Tonight during a show
at Bob Weir’s venue in San Rafael, Calif., on Friday.
The heartfelt poem begins: “If I had to pick one of us to speak for
us all/He would have done the job well/Coming from some crazy
angle/He’d have known which story to tell/He’d tell the truth about
real music/He knew the truth long before he fell…”

Neil
Young And David Crosby Will Be Featured In Documentary
2012 | July 30 | classichitsandoldies.com
A forthcoming PBS documentary on David Geffen boasts an impressive
list of rockers and other celebrities who agreed to talk about the
famously press-shy entertainment-industry mogul and Asylum Records
founder.
Neil Young, Don Henley, Elton John, Jackson Browne, David Crosby and
Slash are among the stars who will be featured in Inventing David
Geffen, a new installment of PBS’ ongoing American Masters
series that’s set to premiere on November 20. One music legend you
won’t see in the film, however, is Bob Dylan, who was briefly signed
to Asylum in the mid 1970s.
Geffen is credited with helping propel the careers of many artists,
including Browne, Joni Mitchell, Crosby, Stills & Nash and Guns N’
Roses. He also infamously sued Young in 1983, when the folk-rocker
was signed to the Geffen Records label, for releasing albums
“musically uncharacteristic of [his] previous recordings.”

New York City, NY on October 16 & 17. The pair of dates has just
been added to the group's extensive U.S. summer tour, which began in

September. CSN website members will have access to pre-sale tickets
for the Beacon shows this week, before the public on sale on Friday,

Graham
Nash Confirms That CSN Will Do Another Record
2012 | July 27 | musicradar.com
Graham Nash: "Two things are happening. One: Stephen doesn't know
the big picture. And two: Stephen is very deaf. He may have misheard
you, or he may have been answering the question he thought you
asked. Crosby, Stills & Nash will do another record. We're right in
the middle of one, Songs We Wish We'd Written. We started that
process with Rick Rubin. It didn't work out, but the idea is still a
brilliant one."
"We took the songs
we did with Rick, put them on the shelf, and we rerecorded them.
We've already done Close Your Eyes, Behind Blue Eyes, Ruby Tuesday
and a couple more. We're in the middle of it, as I said. It's going
to be difficult right now because we're on tour until October. As
you can imagine, it's hard to get three people into the studio,
especially if they're doing different things and have different
schedules. So it comes off that Stephen thinks there'll be no new
recordings, which couldn't be further from the truth."

26, 2010: Neil Young Sideman Ben Keith Dies at 73. He was an
American musician and record producer. Known primarily for his work
as a pedal steel guitarist with Neil Young, Keith was a fixture of
the Nashville country music community.
Keith first worked with Neil Young in 1971 on Young's Harvest album,
having been introduced by Elliot Mazer, the album's producer, who
was looking for a session player in Nashville on short notice. This
spawned a collaboration that would last nearly 40 years, as Keith
went on to play with Young on over a dozen albums and numerous
tours.
Keith also played the role of Grandpa Green in the Neil Young
feature length movie Greendale, a film accompaniment released on DVD
to Young's 2004 album of the same name.

Don
Felder, who played guitar in the Eagles from 1974 to 2001, will
release a solo album titled Road to Forever on Oct. 9. It's his
first solo project since his 1983 debut. Guests include David
Crosby, Graham Nash and Stephen Stills, Steve Lukather, David
Paich and Steve Porcaro of Toto, Randy Jackson, Tommy Shaw and
others.
After leaving the Eagles and ending a 29-year marriage, Felder said
he was inspired to "write out the stories of my life as songs. After
I collected myself, I found I needed to go out and play music again,
and that's how I began recording the album. In the process, I found
out who I really am. I had to find out what happened when I almost
lost it all."

Woods
Hole, Massachusetts – He is a man of many talents, across a host of
fields, and one of the nicest folks I know, but tonight Graham Nash
was honored not for his music, his photography, or even his
paintings – but rather for a lifetime spent protecting one of our
planets natural resources – the great whales.
Before a packed house at the event held by the Stellwagen Bank
Marine Sanctuary, Nash was presented with the Conservation and
Environmental Stewardship Award for a lifetime of achievement spent
passionately raising awareness for these amazing creatures, many of
which call Massachusetts their summer home.
According to an account by one of the attendees, Nash stressed just
how important it is that we leave a better world for our children,
and that we work together to do all that we can.

Richard Nixon is out of office, the war is over, marijuana is slowly

In Miami nine months

Stephen Stills
Box set
2012 |
July 2 | 4waysite.com
As
Graham Nash told Rolling Stone in September last year, He and Joel
Bernstein are working on a boss set for fellow CSN bandmate Stephen
Stills.
The pair have previously worked on box sets of Nash and David
Crosby.
The career spanning 40 year box set will be 4 CDs and it will cover
his work with Buffalo Springfield, CSN and Manassas.
Stephen Stills recently conducted an interview with music radar.com.
He discussed his new box set and said it will be four CD's. Stills
made a candid remark about his unreleased body of work.
"It was suppose to be three discs, but i don't want to have to do it
again, so I said just do four. That, along with Manassas: Pieces,
and Just Roll Tape, that pretty much covers it. There isn't much
more left off that I care about."
It's unlikely that any Stills and Hendrix rarities will be added to
the box set.
"I went through it, and a lot of it is waiting for somebody to start
something. It's isn't really unusable. It deteriorates into giggles
and then the tape stops, I've been through it." Stills said.
The box set is still presumed to be about a year away.
We will update when a formal release date has been revealed.
Neil Young’s New
Concert Film Opens in NYC and L.A. Theaters Today
2012 | June 29 |
classichitsandoldies.com
Neil
Young‘s latest concert film, the Jonathan Demme-directed Neil
Young Journeys, is set to open in theaters in New York City and
Los Angeles on Friday. The flick also will premiere in dozens of
other locations across the country between early July and mid
August.
Journeys features performances from a pair of shows the
folk-rock legend played in May 2011 at Toronto’s Massey Hall, and
also boasts footage of the singer/songwriter visiting his hometown
of Omemee, Canada, driving a vintage car from the rural locale to
the gigs. The documentary is the third movie on which Young and
Demme have collaborated.
The two celebrities visited CBS This Morning earlier this week to
discuss the film. Asked why he works with Demme so frequently, Young
explained, “We have fun, you know. We respect each other, and so
it’s a give-and-take thing. It’s a good relationship.”
In one concert scene captured in Journeys, some spittle flies out of
Young’s mouth and lands on a film camera, causing a temporary hazy
effect. Joking about the segment, Young declares, “It’s saliva-cam.
It’s another Demme first. [When] I saw that, ‘I went, God, it’s so
psychedelic! It’s all distorted. [Demme's] like gone out over the
deep end.”
Also during the interview, Young was asked to explain his ability to
churn out songs so prolifically. “I don’t do anything. I just wait,”
he offered. “It’s like a hunter looking for a rabbit to come out of
a hole, but if you stand there looking down the hole it’s not gonna
come out.”

CSNY 1974 Concert
DVD
due to be released in the first quarter of 2013
2012 | June 22 | 4waysite.com
In an interview with CBS This Morning Crosby, Stills, and Nash
discussed their current tour and how the dynamics of the group are
better than ever before. "Were really good this year, people are
responding well." Nash said.
The group also mentioned the release of their new concert DVD in
July. But perhaps the biggest news of all was an announcement about
the long-awaited 1974 reunion box set. "When Neil joins us, its
different, its a darker edge, more mysterious, he brings a different
kind of music to us." Nash said.
The box set is tentatively set to be released in the first quarter
of 2013.

Graham Nash Working
on Memoir
2012 | June 20 | rollingstone.com
Graham
Nash has struck a deal with Random House's Crown Archetype for an
upcoming memoir, reports the New York Times. The former Hollies
member and partial namesake behind Crosby, Stills and Nash (and
sometimes Young) recently met with publishers in New York to discuss
the memoir. "They were all more than kind to me," he said, laughing.
"But it was the people at Crown and Random House who gave me over
seven figures."
Nash plans to start his tale with his childhood in Salford, England,
and will be totally open about his life and career. "I've been as
honest as I can be. If they asked me a question about drugs, I
answered them," he says of his meetings with the publishers. "You
ask me a question, you’re going to get an answer. Whether you like
the answer or not is your problem, but you’ll get an answer."
The untitled memoir is set for a Fall 2013 release. "I’ve had an
incredible ringside seat to the last 50-odd years of rock & roll,"
said Nash. "I think people will be very interested to know what the
British Invasion was like, what Woodstock was like, what my friends
are like, what trouble we got into, what heights we scaled. I think
they'll be interested in all of it."
Neil Young Says
Buffalo Springfield Reunion Not Out Of The Question
2012 | June 10 | rttnews.com
Neil
Young says that a Buffalo Springfield reunion tour could happen in
the future, even despite the fact that he aborted a 30-date reunion
tour last year.
Speaking with Rolling Stone, Young explained that, "[A reunion]
could happen, but it's not happening now."
Young has reservations regarding the tour, saying: "I'd be on a tour
of my past for the rest of (expletive deleted) time, which I can't
do. I have to be able to move forward. I can't be relegated."
The "Mr. Soul" singer did conclude on a hopeful note, however,
saying, "there is this seed of something great still there. It's
worth exploring again."
Buffalo Springfield was only together for two years back in the late
1960s. They briefly reunited in the 1980s for a rehearsal that lead
to a Buffalo Springfield Revisited tour (minus Young).
Young then reunited with remaining members Stephen Stills and Richie
Furay in 2010 to perform for Young's annual Bridge School Benefit
charity show. The group then planned a tour following that show, but
Young pulled out several shows into the tour.

Stores Today!
2012 | June 5 | 4waysite.com, popspotsnyc.com and wikipedia.org
Neil Young & Crazy Horse's first album in over 9 years - Americana -
is now in stores!
The album is rich a
collection of classic American compositions, some dating back 200
years or more and each has its own unique history veiled with
multiple meanings and relatable, lyrical significance as applicable
today as they were in the America of yesteryear.
But where does the
cover photo comes from..?
The photo features
Geronimo in a 1905 Locomobile Model C, taken at the Miller brothers'
101 Ranch located southwest of Ponca City, Oklahoma, June 11, 1905.
Geronimo was a
prominent Native American leader of the Bedonkohe Apache who fought
against Mexico and the United States for their expansion into Apache
tribal lands for several decades during the Apache Wars. "Geronimo"
was the name given to him during a battle with Mexican soldiers. His
Chiricahua name is often rendered as Goyathlay or Goyahkla in
English.
After an attack by a
company of Mexican soldiers killed his mother, wife and three
children in 1858, Geronimo joined revenge attacks on the Mexicans.
During his career as a war chief, he was notorious for consistently
urging raids upon Mexican Provinces and their towns, and later
against American locations across Arizona, New Mexico and western
Texas.
In 1886 Geronimo
surrendered to U.S. authorities after a lengthy pursuit. As a
prisoner of war in old age he became a celebrity and appeared in
fairs but was never allowed to return to the land of his birth.
He later regretted his surrender and claimed the conditions he made
had been ignored. Geronimo died in 1909 from complications of
pneumonia at Fort Sill, Oklahoma.
Part of the “visual pun” is that Crazy Horse was the name of a
famous Indian too.
A “tip of the hat” to
Bob Egan of
PopSpots for the tip on the Geronimo photo!
Neil Young and Crazy
Horse Confirm North American Tour Dates
2012 | June 4 | hollywoodreporter.com and thrasherswheat.org
Neil
Young and Crazy Horse are reuniting for their first tour in eight
years.
After dates in Kingston
and London, Ontario, the concert tour will dip down into the
northeastern U.S. market.
The North American tour will continue with a western U.S. swing,
including an Oct. 17 date at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles with
Los Lobos, before ending with a Bridgeport, Conn., concert with
Patti Smith on Dec. 4.
Young and Crazy Horse also plan November concert dates with Smith in
New York City, Philadelphia and Fairfax, Va.
Young said of the
upcoming Americana dates, which he described as "really a very short
tour." That news may come as a disappointment for fans hoping to
catch dates around the Americanas and elsewhere around the world.
And if that's not puzzling enough, how about this other news nugget
from Rolling Stone by Andy Greene where Neil Young explains Buffalo
Springfield's aborted reunion and possibly touring again: "That
could happen," says Young. "But it's not happening now. I'd be on a
tour of my past for the rest of fucking time, which I can't do. I
have to be able to move forward. I can't be relegated. I did enough
of it for right then, but there is this seed of something great
still there. It's worth exploring again."
Neil
Young Enlists Shepard Fairey for Americana Visuals
2012 | June 4 | rollingstone.com
For his new album with Crazy Horse, Americana, Neil Young asked
artist Shepard Fairey to create paintings to represent each of the
record's 11 songs. The series of works premiered in L.A. last night
at the Perry Rubenstein Gallery and will be on display there from
June 28th through July 14th.
"We discovered a lot of depth in these songs and the visuals of
these are just amazing," Young told Rolling Stone. "'Clementine' is
so deep with its original verses and this art, you really get a
feeling for the tenseness and desperation of the situation, the
unresolved death and longing."

Obama
to party with... Crosby, Stills & Nash

President Obama is
working today, speaking at the Air Force Academy graduation, but
tonight, one half of a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame band will play at
a high-dollar fundraiser with the president.
Approximately 60 people will pay $35,800 -- roughly $2.14 million
total -- to have dinner with Obama in Silicon Valley tonight. The
fundraiser "will also include a performance by David Crosby and
Graham Nash of Crosby, Stills, and Nash," according to the White
House pool report.
"From the beginning they’ve been politically astute folk troubadours
whose songs often address real events," the Rock and Roll Hall of
Fame, which received the band in 1997, says of Crosby, Stills, Nash,
and Young (CSNY). "Tin soldiers and Nixon coming," the band sang in
the opening line of one of their earliest hits, "Ohio," about the
Kent State shooting in 1968. "Four dead in Ohio / . . . / Soldiers
are cutting us down," they added.

Booker T bassist
Donald Dunn dies in Tokyo aged 70
2012 | May 14 | washingtonpost.com
The MGs were the house
band for Stax Records, and Dunn can be heard on songs such as Otis
Redding's "Respect" and Sam and Dave's "Hold On, I'm Comin'".
He was in Japan for a series of concerts, and had played two shows
on Saturday night.
In his later career,
Dunn worked with the likes of Eric Clapton, CSNY, Neil Young, Stevie
Nicks and Rod Stewart. He played himself in the 1980 movie The Blues
Brothers, and its 2000 sequel.
In addition to
touring with CSNY and Neil Young, Donald "Duck" Dunn is featured on
the 2002 Neil Young album "Are You Passionate?".

'Waging Heavy Peace'

2012 | May 5 | 4waysite.com
An iconic figure in the history of rock and pop culture, Neil Young
has written his eagerly awaited memoir: 'I felt that writing books
fit me like a glove; I just started and I just kept going'.
Young
offers a kaleidoscopic view of his personal life and musical career,
spanning his time in bands Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills &
Nash, and his role as the patron saint of the grunge scene; and
moving from the snows of Ontario through the LSD-laden boulevards of
1966 Los Angeles to the contemplative paradise of Hawaii today.
Candid, witty and revealing, this book takes its place beside the
classic memoirs of Bob Dylan and Keith Richards.
Cover album: CSN
have continued recording in Jackson Browne's studio
2012 | April 21 | lvrj.com
In
January [2011] CSN announced the plug had been pulled on a
collaboration with superstar producer Rick Rubin on a collection of
covers by their classic rock peers.
"We tried it and gave a real good shot at it, but it just didn't
work out," Nash says. "I guess part of it is Rick is absolutely used
to being totally in charge. ... That's OK with a lot of the new
guys," he adds, but "we've been making records since almost before
he was born. He rubbed David the wrong way a couple of times and
(the sessions) just got to be work ... rather than a natural flow of
energy."
The album concept is still "a great idea" that the three have since
continued by recording in Jackson Browne's studio.
Neil Young & Crazy
Horse To Co-headline Outside Lands 2012 Festival
2012 | April 18 | mercurynews.com
Two
local legends -- Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Metallica and Neil
Young -- are among the highlights of the 2012 Outside Lands Music
and Arts Festival lineup announced Tuesday.
Other top acts include Motown Stevie Wonder, alt-rock guitar hero
Jack White and multi-Grammy-winners, the Foo Fighters.
The complete lineup was announce Tuesday by Berkeley-based promoter
Another Planet Entertainment. Three-day passes for the festival --
set to take place Aug. 10-12 at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco --
go on sale at noon April 19 through the festival's
website.
There is no word on when --or if -- single day tickets will be made
available. Early bird (or what promoters call "eager beaver")
tickets already went on sale and sold out in less one day -- which
was record time for the event.
A variety of three-day passes will be available ranging in price
from $195 to $495. Three-day parking passes cost $149.50 and a
three-day shuttle pass costs $29.50.
This year's bill is incredibly deep, featuring dozens of worthy
acts. Besides such big-name acts as Wonder and Young, who will be
performing with his legendary Crazy Horse backing band, Outside
Lands will also present top electronic music act Skrillex, indie-pop
daredevil Beck (who performed at the inaugural Outside Lands in
2008), avant-garde Icelandic troupe Sigur Ros, folksy favorite.
Pre-order Neil
Young's new album Americana
2012 | April 17 | amazon.com
The pre-order for the new album "Americana" by Neil Young & Crazy
Horse is now available. Get it before it hits store on June 5th!
"Americana" is the
first album from Neil Young & Crazy Horse in nearly nine years. As
you’ll see from the track-listing, AMERICANA is collection of
classic, American folk songs. In their day, some of these may have
been referred to as “protest songs,” “murder ballads,” or
campfire-type songs passed down with universal, relatable tales for
everyman. Some of these compositions which, like “Tom Dooley” and
“Oh Susannah,” were written in the 1800s, while others, like “This
Land Is Your Land” (utilizing the original, widely misinterpreted
“deleted verses”) and “Get A Job,” are mid-20th-century folk
classics. It’s also interesting to note that “God Save The Queen,”
Britain’s national anthem, also became the de facto national anthem
of sorts before the establishment of The Union as we know it until
we came to adopt our very own “The Star Spangled Banner,” which has
been recognized for use as early as 1889 and made our official
national anthem in 1931.
Each of these
compositions is very much part of the fabric of our American
heritage.

Trademarks New Audio Format
2012 | April 3 | rollingstone.com
They
might sound like great song titles, but "21st Century Record
Player," "Earth Storage" and "Thanks for Listening" aren't new Neil
Young tunes. They're trademarks that the rocker recently filed with
the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, Rolling Stone has found, and
they indicate that Young is developing a high-resolution audio
alternative to the MP3 format..
According to the filed
documents, Young applied for six trademarks last June.
CSN
Summer Tour - Crosby Out Of Action Vocally
2012 | March 30 | 4waysite.com
CSN fans who
attended the two Melbourne concerts, were treated to a Stills Nash
concert as David had no voice. So Graham and Stephen stepped up to
the plate vocally and we got a version of Long Time Gone with
Stephen on lead vocal and Wooden Ships with Graham on lead.
They threw in a few other songs such as So Begins the Task, Wasted
on the Way and For What its Worth. Crosby made an appearance vocally
only on Helplessly Hoping. And even then you could see it was an
effort for him, although he continued to add his energetic rhythm
guitar parts throughout the concert.
On the tours in '82
and '83, there were times when Michael Finnigan, without the light
on him, would sing David's parts.
Speedy recovery to
David!

Summer Tour - The First Review 2012 | March 25 | 13thfloor.co.nz
Thanks to our
location on Mother Earth, New Zealanders often get either the
beginning of a tour or the tail end. Fortunately for the audience at
Trusts Stadium, Crosby, Stills & Nash chose to kick off their tour
here. The trio, along with their five-piece band, hit the stage
running, with an impassioned version of Carry On, that, um, carried
on for eight and a half minutes. It was clear from the start that
this was not going to be a night of ageing rock stars going through
the motions, but rather a celebration of songs, old and new.
Neil
Young Talks About Cover Of God Save the Queen 2012 | March 23 | dailymail.co.uk
Traditionalist
Britons were furious when the Sex Pistols released their version of
‘God Save the Queen. Then patriotic Americans were outraged when
Jimi Hendrix came out with his rendition of ‘The Star Spangled
Banner’.
Now Neil Young has
managed to provoke the indignation of music lovers both sides of the
pond in one fell swoop – recording a version of God Save the Queen –
on an album of American folk songs.
The 66-year-old
Canadian rock star sings the anthem on his new album with rock band
Crazy Horse, accompanied by a children’s choir.
But in a cover
sleeve blurb to accompany the track, Young explains the song may not
be so out of place on an album of American folk songs after all.

I Am Not Neil
Young, the musical - New Full Version, 2012
2012 | March 17 | cashboxcanada.ca
While
we all love Neil Young, it’ s safe to say he’s not the first artist
that comes to mind when the idea of a musical based on his work is
floated. Much better is the idea of a musical based on the life of
someone who spent his life living the music of Neil.
All that and more is covered like a Hudson’s Bay blanket in I Am Not
Neil Young-The Musical, directed by Don Lamoreux and starring Frank
Wilks.
At press time there
were no firm dates but plans are afoot to put the show on the road
this summer.
Today In
History...
2012 | March 11 | 4waysite.com
On this day in history, CSNY released Déjà Vu (1970).
Déjà Vu was greatly
anticipated after the popularity of the first CSN album and the
addition of Young to the group. Stills estimates that the album took
around 800 hours of studio time to record; this figure may be
exaggerated, even though the individual tracks display meticulous
attention to detail.
In many ways Déjà Vu
was a success. It was a chart topper, and became a classic
rock album.

Neil Young Film Due in June
2012 | March 7 | gibson.com
The latest collaboration between rock legend Neil Young and famed
director Jonathan Demme has a release date. Neil Young Journeys will
hit theaters starting June 29, via Sony Pictures Classics, according
to Ultimate Classic Rock.
Following on the heels of Neil Young: Heart of Gold (2006) and Neil
Young Trunk Show (2009), Journeys was filmed toward the end of
Young’s 2011 solo tour. In the movie, the Rock and Roll Hall of
Famer travels from his hometown of Omemee, Ontario, Canada to
Toronto, where he’s booked to play two shows at Massey Hall. During
the trek, Young “reminisces about childhood friends and talks about
how the surroundings have changed over the decades while rolling
toward Toronto in a 1956 Ford Crown Victoria,” according to the Los
Angeles Times.
Although fans can check out Heart of Gold on DVD, Trunk Show has yet
to be released for home audiences – a situation that Demme said he’s
hoping to remedy.
Oxford Gets $41 Million Gift for Ertegun Scholarships
2012 | March 1 | nytimes.com and 4waysite.com
As
the man who founded Atlantic Records, Ahmet Ertegun helped give
careers to musical artists like Led Zeppelin and Crosby, Stills,
Nash & Young. Now the estate of Ertegun, who died in 2006, and his
widow, Mica, have given more than $41 million to Oxford University
that will benefit its graduate students in the humanities, the
university announced on Wednesday.
He was CSN’s “spiritual
godfather”. Ahmet Ertegün (July 31, 1923 – December 14, 2006) and
Nasuhi Ertegün were the Turkish-American executives of Atlantic
Records and arguably the most influential record producers in the
history of American music. Ahmet Ertegun helped define American
music as the founder of Atlantic Records, a label that popularized
the gritty R&B of Ray Charles, the classic soul of Aretha Franklin
and the British rock of the Rolling Stones and CSNY.

Sir Paul
McCartney Honored at Musicares by Neil Young & Crazy Horse
2012 | February 11 | mccartneyphoto.blogspot.com
Mr.
McCartney was the guest of honor this year at the annual gala for
the charity, which is operated by the same organization that
oversees the Grammy Awards – the National Academy of Recording Arts
and Sciences.
Not only did a dozen
top-flight musicians – many of them nominated for Grammys — perform
Mr. McCartney’s songs, but the former Beatle thrilled the audience
of about 2,800 people with two numbers from his recently released
album of standards and a live rendition of the climactic medley near
the end of the Beatles 1969 album Abbey Road.
But the performance
that brought the crowd to its feet and seemed to capture the rock
and roll spirit of the early Beatles came from Neil Young and Crazy
Horse. Mr. Young, his long grey hair spilling out from under his
white hat, launched into “I Saw Her Standing There” in a loose, free
style, letting the guitars ring as he sang the teenage anthem with a
snarl and launched into a post-modern guitar solo in which the
melody jumped, stuttered and seemed to cry out in pain. Simply put,
the song rocked, sounding as if it could have been recorded
yesterday.
“Paul!” Mr. Young
said after he finished, raising his hand in a salute, while the
crowd applauded wildly.

CROSBY - Solo album STEPHEN STILLS - Box set, 3 (4?) CD's (covering Buffalo Springfield and CSN as
well) and two more (Stills in 2011: There'll probably be another one
after that and another one)
- Stills & Hendrix (John McDermott, one of the archivists and
overseers of Jimi Hendrix's recordings, has confirmed that an album
of tracks featuring Stephen Stills and Hendrix is being readied for
release. Another source close to the project told MusicRadar in
2008: "We have tapes in our archive - Jimi on guitar and bass - plus
Stephen had some from his 1970 solo album that he wanted to finish,
fix and mix. From a musical point of view, it's definitely Stephen
with Jimi helping - as opposed to a joint collaboration. But it is
still a very nice project.")
- Solo album (Stills in 2009: "I'm finally feeling some songs and
some things to say") NEIL YOUNG
- "Archives box Vol. 2-5" (according to Elliot Roberts, Vol. 2 will
be released "two or three years" after 2009's Volume 1)
- Americana and another one (in a new video interview - 2012 -
shared by Rolling Stone, Neil Young said, “I have made an album and
am making a second one already. I did do this one record called
‘Americana’ that hasn’t come out yet and it has a choir in it that
sings with Crazy Horse. A very young choir of children. It’s songs
we all know. They’re songs we all know from kindergarten, but Crazy
Horse has rearranged them, and they now belong to us.”) CROSBY & NASH
- Benefit album
- "Acoustic 1993" (Featuring Jef Pevar?)
- "San Francisco 1974" (Nash in 2000: " Some of the same songs
[4WaySite: "Another Stoney Evening"], but a few surprises, too. And
another wild audience." CSN - Album of covers (featuring CSN renditions of songs by the
Rolling Stones, Beatles, Bob Dylan and the Grateful Dead) CSNY - "Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young live 1974" DVD/3CD
- Studio album (Nash in March, 2010: "Neil wants to do a record. He
told me a couple of days ago that he’s very interested in doing a
new CSNY record").
- "Fillmore" DVD (like the parts in Journey Through the Past, but
the entire concert. This was mentioned in interviews promoting the
Deja Vu movie)
- "CSNY2K live CD/DVD" (we can probably remove this one from this
list, although in 2000 Nash said "Work on the CSNY [CSNY2K] DVD is
going slowly due to prior commitments but we are working on both the
audio and the video. We have had CDs cut of our favorite
performances of our songs. We will choose the best then meet to
discuss what songs should finally make it. Larry Johnson is doing
the same with the video so work is going on"). MANASSAS - Some unreleased studio recordings (source: newsleader.com)
Graham
Nash and James Raymond released a single
2012 | February 4 | crosbynash.shop.musictoday.com
One project managed
to slip under the 4WaySite radar: Graham Nash and James Raymond
released a single about Bradley Manning called "Almost Gone."
Graham Nash and James Raymond composed the song “Almost Gone (The
Ballad of Bradley Manning)” during last spring’s US tour of
Crosby-Nash, and the new recording serves as the music bed for the
video; it features an impassioned lead vocal by Nash. “Bradley
Manning is a hero to me,” he sings, acknowledging Manning’s role in
making public videos and documents that shed light on such as issues
as the true number and cause of civilian casualties in Iraq, human
rights abuses by U.S.-funded contractors and foreign militaries, and
the role that spying and bribes play in international diplomacy.
When
Steve Jobs went Home, He Listened To Vinyl
2012 | February 1 | allthingsd.com
You
know what the biggest problem with music today is? Sound quality.
That’s Neil Young’s take on the issue, anyway. For years, the
musician has been obsessed with improving the way modern music
sounds, sonically speaking.
In an interview with Walt Mossberg and Peter Kafka at our D: Dive
Into Media conference, Young, the perennial music purist, said that
while modern music formats like MP3 are convenient, they sound
lousy.
“Steve Jobs as a
pioneer of digital music, and his legacy is tremendous,” Young said.
“But when he went home, he listened to vinyl. And you’ve got to
believe that if he’d lived long enough, he would have done what I’m
trying to do.”
Listen To A (Probably) New Thirty-Seven Minute Neil Young and Crazy
Horse Jam
2012 | January 28 | rollingstone.com
Neil
Young and Crazy Horse fans, prepare to have your minds blown. This
morning, a new video appeared on Young's website of a thirty-seven
minute Neil Young and Crazy Horse jam session. Unfortunately, the
video merely shows tape rolling back in a studio from many different
angles – but many Neil-ologists on the internet have concluded that
it's newly recorded. The group plays tiny bits of "Fuckin' Up" and a
few other songs in the midst of a crazily long jam, before
transitioning into an epic version of "Cortez The Killer" after
about nineteen minutes.
Sharp-eyed fans will notice lyrics to a handful of previously
unknown songs scattered around the studio, as well as a rubber
chicken and an alligator head. The titles of the songs appear to
read "Oh Susanna," "Love + Wall," "Ontario," "This Land Is Your
Land," "Gallows Tree," "Oh My Darling" and "Clementine." This could
certainly be an old recording, but judging by the sound of Young's
singing voice, it seems to be new. We can't embed the video here, so
check it out on Young's official
website.
Confirmed:
Neil Young Recording With Crazy Horse
2012 | January 23 | rollingstone.com
Neil Young is recording a new album with Crazy Horse. Now confirmed
by Rolling Stone: "It's looking good," a representative for Young
says. According to the fansite report, Young shared the news over
the weekend at the Slamdance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, at an
event with Jonathan Demme to promote their new movie Journeys. The
audience "erupted in applause" when Young said that he was working
with Crazy Horse again. Multiple fans subsequently posted on Crazy
Horse drummer Ralph Molina's Facebook wall to ask if the news was
true. His response: "Yes!"
There's word of a
spring release for the album, but don't get your hopes up too high.
Things change very quickly in the world of Neil Young. Remember that
30-date Buffalo Springfield that was supposedly happening this year?
Neil Young
Angered By 'Sound Of Music Today'
2012 | January 23 | mtv.com
It's
hard to argue about the digital age of music in terms of efficiency
and portability. When it comes down to cycling through shelves upon
shelves of old CDs versus taking one's entire library of music on
the go in a single handheld device, the choice seems rather clear.
But convenience aside, there is something missing in the digital
translation of tunes — at least there is according to legendary folk
rocker Neil Young, who spoke with MTV News in Park City (where he's
promoting the Slamdance release of his new Jonathan Demme-helmed
documentary "Neil Young Journeys") and expressed his concerns over
the current state of "the sound of music."
"I'm finding that I have a little bit of trouble with the quality of
the sound of music today," Young said. "I don't like it. It just
makes me angry. Not the quality of the music, but we're in the 21st
century and we have the worst sound that we've ever had. It's worse
than a 78 [rpm record]. Where are our geniuses? What happened?"
Young argued that MP3s feature only 5 percent of the data from an
original master file, which he sees as a major problem.
2012:
The Year Of The Horse?
2012 | January 23 | thrasherswheat.org
According to
Thrasherswheat, Neil Young has been recording with Crazy Horse.
"One album is complete and they are working on another. No mention
of content or time table.
Neil did talk about a group of Americana songs that he had recorded
as well with a youth choir...and the Horse. When he spoke of
recording with Crazy Horse again the crowd erupted in applause".
Neil Young's
company sued over warehouse fire sparked by hybrid car
2012 | January 20 | mercurynews.com
The
company founded by rocker Neil Young to convert his one-of-a-kind
LincVolt hybrid electric car is being sued for nearly $500,000 after
the vehicle sparked a fire that seriously damaged two San Carlos
warehouses in 2010, according to a lawsuit.
The suit, filed Tuesday by Unigard Insurance Co., says LincVolt LLC,
which lists Young as an officer, was negligent when it converted the
1959 Lincoln Continental to run on electricity and a biodiesel-powered
generator.
"The altering of a
gas-powered 1959 vehicle and its components is an extreme departure
from what a reasonably careful person would do," Unigard Insurance
Co. claims in the suit filed in San Mateo County Superior Court.
