Booker T bassist
Donald Dunn dies in Tokyo aged 70
2012 | May 14 | washingtonpost.com
The MGs were the house
band for Stax Records, and Dunn can be heard on songs such as Otis
Redding's "Respect" and Sam and Dave's "Hold On, I'm Comin'".
He was in Japan for a series of concerts, and had played two shows
on Saturday night.
In his later career,
Dunn worked with the likes of Eric Clapton, CSNY, Neil Young, Stevie
Nicks and Rod Stewart. He played himself in the 1980 movie The Blues
Brothers, and its 2000 sequel.
In addition to
touring with CSNY and Neil Young, Donald "Duck" Dunn is featured on
the 2002 Neil Young album "Are You Passionate?".

'Waging Heavy Peace'
by Neil Young is now up on Amazon.com
2012 | May 5 | 4waysite.com
An iconic figure in the history of rock and pop culture, Neil Young
has written his eagerly awaited memoir: 'I felt that writing books
fit me like a glove; I just started and I just kept going'.
Young
offers a kaleidoscopic view of his personal life and musical career,
spanning his time in bands Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills &
Nash, and his role as the patron saint of the grunge scene; and
moving from the snows of Ontario through the LSD-laden boulevards of
1966 Los Angeles to the contemplative paradise of Hawaii today.
Candid, witty and revealing, this book takes its place beside the
classic memoirs of Bob Dylan and Keith Richards.

Cover album: CSN
have continued recording in Jackson Browne's studio
2012 | April 21 | lvrj.com
In
January [2011] CSN announced the plug had been pulled on a
collaboration with superstar producer Rick Rubin on a collection of
covers by their classic rock peers.
"We tried it and gave a real good shot at it, but it just didn't
work out," Nash says. "I guess part of it is Rick is absolutely used
to being totally in charge. ... That's OK with a lot of the new
guys," he adds, but "we've been making records since almost before
he was born. He rubbed David the wrong way a couple of times and
(the sessions) just got to be work ... rather than a natural flow of
energy."
The album concept is still "a great idea" that the three have since
continued by recording in Jackson Browne's studio.

Neil Young & Crazy
Horse To Co-headline Outside Lands 2012 Festival
2012 | April 18 | mercurynews.com
Two
local legends -- Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Metallica and Neil
Young -- are among the highlights of the 2012 Outside Lands Music
and Arts Festival lineup announced Tuesday.
Other top acts include Motown Stevie Wonder, alt-rock guitar hero
Jack White and multi-Grammy-winners, the Foo Fighters.
The complete lineup was announce Tuesday by Berkeley-based promoter
Another Planet Entertainment. Three-day passes for the festival --
set to take place Aug. 10-12 at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco --
go on sale at noon April 19 through the festival's
website.
There is no word on when --or if -- single day tickets will be made
available. Early bird (or what promoters call "eager beaver")
tickets already went on sale and sold out in less one day -- which
was record time for the event.
A variety of three-day passes will be available ranging in price
from $195 to $495. Three-day parking passes cost $149.50 and a
three-day shuttle pass costs $29.50.
This year's bill is incredibly deep, featuring dozens of worthy
acts. Besides such big-name acts as Wonder and Young, who will be
performing with his legendary Crazy Horse backing band, Outside
Lands will also present top electronic music act Skrillex, indie-pop
daredevil Beck (who performed at the inaugural Outside Lands in
2008), avant-garde Icelandic troupe Sigur Ros, folksy favorite.

Pre-order Neil
Young's new album "Americana"
2012 | April 17 | amazon.com
The pre-order for the new album "Americana" by Neil Young & Crazy
Horse is now available. Get it before it hits store on June 5th!
"Americana" is the
first album from Neil Young & Crazy Horse in nearly nine years. As
you’ll see from the track-listing, AMERICANA is collection of
classic, American folk songs. In their day, some of these may have
been referred to as “protest songs,” “murder ballads,” or
campfire-type songs passed down with universal, relatable tales for
everyman. Some of these compositions which, like “Tom Dooley” and
“Oh Susannah,” were written in the 1800s, while others, like “This
Land Is Your Land” (utilizing the original, widely misinterpreted
“deleted verses”) and “Get A Job,” are mid-20th-century folk
classics. It’s also interesting to note that “God Save The Queen,”
Britain’s national anthem, also became the de facto national anthem
of sorts before the establishment of The Union as we know it until
we came to adopt our very own “The Star Spangled Banner,” which has
been recognized for use as early as 1889 and made our official
national anthem in 1931.
Each of these
compositions is very much part of the fabric of our American
heritage.

Trademarks New Audio Format
2012 | April 3 | rollingstone.com
They
might sound like great song titles, but "21st Century Record
Player," "Earth Storage" and "Thanks for Listening" aren't new Neil
Young tunes. They're trademarks that the rocker recently filed with
the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, Rolling Stone has found, and
they indicate that Young is developing a high-resolution audio
alternative to the MP3 format..
According to the filed
documents, Young applied for six trademarks last June.

Summer Tour - Crosby Out Of Action Vocally
2012 | March 30 | 4waysite.com
CSN fans who
attended the two Melbourne concerts, were treated to a Stills Nash
concert as David had no voice. So Graham and Stephen stepped up to
the plate vocally and we got a version of Long Time Gone with
Stephen on lead vocal and Wooden Ships with Graham on lead.
They threw in a few other songs such as So Begins the Task, Wasted
on the Way and For What its Worth. Crosby made an appearance vocally
only on Helplessly Hoping. And even then you could see it was an
effort for him, although he continued to add his energetic rhythm
guitar parts throughout the concert.
On the tours in '82
and '83, there were times when Michael Finnigan, without the light
on him, would sing David's parts.
Speedy recovery to
David!

Summer Tour - The First Review
2012 | March 25 | 13thfloor.co.nz
Thanks to our
location on Mother Earth, New Zealanders often get either the
beginning of a tour or the tail end. Fortunately for the audience at
Trusts Stadium, Crosby, Stills & Nash chose to kick off their tour
here. The trio, along with their five-piece band, hit the stage
running, with an impassioned version of Carry On, that, um, carried
on for eight and a half minutes. It was clear from the start that
this was not going to be a night of ageing rock stars going through
the motions, but rather a celebration of songs, old and new.

Neil
Young Talks About Cover Of God Save the Queen
2012 | March 23 | dailymail.co.uk
Traditionalist
Britons were furious when the Sex Pistols released their version of
‘God Save the Queen. Then patriotic Americans were outraged when
Jimi Hendrix came out with his rendition of ‘The Star Spangled
Banner’.
Now Neil Young has
managed to provoke the indignation of music lovers both sides of the
pond in one fell swoop – recording a version of God Save the Queen –
on an album of American folk songs.
The 66-year-old
Canadian rock star sings the anthem on his new album with rock band
Crazy Horse, accompanied by a children’s choir.
But in a cover
sleeve blurb to accompany the track, Young explains the song may not
be so out of place on an album of American folk songs after all.

I Am Not Neil
Young, the musical - New Full Version, 2012
2012 | March 17 | cashboxcanada.ca
While
we all love Neil Young, it’ s safe to say he’s not the first artist
that comes to mind when the idea of a musical based on his work is
floated. Much better is the idea of a musical based on the life of
someone who spent his life living the music of Neil.
All that and more is covered like a Hudson’s Bay blanket in I Am Not
Neil Young-The Musical, directed by Don Lamoreux and starring Frank
Wilks.
At press time there
were no firm dates but plans are afoot to put the show on the road
this summer.

Today In
History...
2012 | March 11 | 4waysite.com
On this day in history, CSNY released Déjà Vu (1970).
Déjà Vu was greatly
anticipated after the popularity of the first CSN album and the
addition of Young to the group. Stills estimates that the album took
around 800 hours of studio time to record; this figure may be
exaggerated, even though the individual tracks display meticulous
attention to detail.
In many ways Déjà Vu
was a success. It was a chart topper, and became a classic
rock album.

Neil Young Film Due in June
2012 | March 7 | gibson.com
The latest collaboration between rock legend Neil Young and famed
director Jonathan Demme has a release date. Neil Young Journeys will
hit theaters starting June 29, via Sony Pictures Classics, according
to Ultimate Classic Rock.
Following on the heels of Neil Young: Heart of Gold (2006) and Neil
Young Trunk Show (2009), Journeys was filmed toward the end of
Young’s 2011 solo tour. In the movie, the Rock and Roll Hall of
Famer travels from his hometown of Omemee, Ontario, Canada to
Toronto, where he’s booked to play two shows at Massey Hall. During
the trek, Young “reminisces about childhood friends and talks about
how the surroundings have changed over the decades while rolling
toward Toronto in a 1956 Ford Crown Victoria,” according to the Los
Angeles Times.
Although fans can check out Heart of Gold on DVD, Trunk Show has yet
to be released for home audiences – a situation that Demme said he’s
hoping to remedy.

Oxford Gets $41 Million Gift for Ertegun Scholarships
2012 | March 1 | nytimes.com and 4waysite.com
As
the man who founded Atlantic Records, Ahmet Ertegun helped give
careers to musical artists like Led Zeppelin and Crosby, Stills,
Nash & Young. Now the estate of Ertegun, who died in 2006, and his
widow, Mica, have given more than $41 million to Oxford University
that will benefit its graduate students in the humanities, the
university announced on Wednesday.
He was CSN’s “spiritual
godfather”. Ahmet Ertegün (July 31, 1923 – December 14, 2006) and
Nasuhi Ertegün were the Turkish-American executives of Atlantic
Records and arguably the most influential record producers in the
history of American music. Ahmet Ertegun helped define American
music as the founder of Atlantic Records, a label that popularized
the gritty R&B of Ray Charles, the classic soul of Aretha Franklin
and the British rock of the Rolling Stones and CSNY.

Sir Paul
McCartney Honored at Musicares by Neil Young & Crazy Horse
2012 | February 11 | mccartneyphoto.blogspot.com
Mr.
McCartney was the guest of honor this year at the annual gala for
the charity, which is operated by the same organization that
oversees the Grammy Awards – the National Academy of Recording Arts
and Sciences.
Not only did a dozen
top-flight musicians – many of them nominated for Grammys — perform
Mr. McCartney’s songs, but the former Beatle thrilled the audience
of about 2,800 people with two numbers from his recently released
album of standards and a live rendition of the climactic medley near
the end of the Beatles 1969 album Abbey Road.
But the performance
that brought the crowd to its feet and seemed to capture the rock
and roll spirit of the early Beatles came from Neil Young and Crazy
Horse. Mr. Young, his long grey hair spilling out from under his
white hat, launched into “I Saw Her Standing There” in a loose, free
style, letting the guitars ring as he sang the teenage anthem with a
snarl and launched into a post-modern guitar solo in which the
melody jumped, stuttered and seemed to cry out in pain. Simply put,
the song rocked, sounding as if it could have been recorded
yesterday.
“Paul!” Mr. Young
said after he finished, raising his hand in a salute, while the
crowd applauded wildly.

Rumored and
expected CSNY albums in all their forms
2012 | February 6 | 4waysite.com
DAVID
CROSBY
- Solo album
STEPHEN STILLS
- Box set, 3 (4?) CD's (covering Buffalo Springfield and CSN as
well) and two more (Stills in 2011: There'll probably be another one
after that and another one)
- Stills & Hendrix (John McDermott, one of the archivists and
overseers of Jimi Hendrix's recordings, has confirmed that an album
of tracks featuring Stephen Stills and Hendrix is being readied for
release. Another source close to the project told MusicRadar in
2008: "We have tapes in our archive - Jimi on guitar and bass - plus
Stephen had some from his 1970 solo album that he wanted to finish,
fix and mix. From a musical point of view, it's definitely Stephen
with Jimi helping - as opposed to a joint collaboration. But it is
still a very nice project.")
- Solo album (Stills in 2009: "I'm finally feeling some songs and
some things to say")
NEIL YOUNG
- "Archives box Vol. 2-5" (according to Elliot Roberts, Vol. 2 will
be released "two or three years" after 2009's Volume 1)
- Americana and another one (in a new video interview - 2012 -
shared by Rolling Stone, Neil Young said, “I have made an album and
am making a second one already. I did do this one record called
‘Americana’ that hasn’t come out yet and it has a choir in it that
sings with Crazy Horse. A very young choir of children. It’s songs
we all know. They’re songs we all know from kindergarten, but Crazy
Horse has rearranged them, and they now belong to us.”)
CROSBY & NASH
- Benefit album
- "Acoustic 1993" (Featuring Jef Pevar?)
- "San Francisco 1974" (Nash in 2000: " Some of the same songs
[4WaySite: "Another Stoney Evening"], but a few surprises, too. And
another wild audience."
CSN
- Album of covers (featuring CSN renditions of songs by the
Rolling Stones, Beatles, Bob Dylan and the Grateful Dead)
CSNY
- "Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young live 1974" DVD/3CD
- Studio album (Nash in March, 2010: "Neil wants to do a record. He
told me a couple of days ago that he’s very interested in doing a
new CSNY record").
- "Fillmore" DVD (like the parts in Journey Through the Past, but
the entire concert. This was mentioned in interviews promoting the
Deja Vu movie)
- "CSNY2K live CD/DVD" (we can probably remove this one from this
list, although in 2000 Nash said "Work on the CSNY [CSNY2K] DVD is
going slowly due to prior commitments but we are working on both the
audio and the video. We have had CDs cut of our favorite
performances of our songs. We will choose the best then meet to
discuss what songs should finally make it. Larry Johnson is doing
the same with the video so work is going on").

Graham
Nash and James Raymond released a single
2012 | February 4 | crosbynash.shop.musictoday.com
One project managed
to slip under the 4WaySite radar: Graham Nash and James Raymond
released a single about Bradley Manning called "Almost Gone."
Graham Nash and James Raymond composed the song “Almost Gone (The
Ballad of Bradley Manning)” during last spring’s US tour of
Crosby-Nash, and the new recording serves as the music bed for the
video; it features an impassioned lead vocal by Nash. “Bradley
Manning is a hero to me,” he sings, acknowledging Manning’s role in
making public videos and documents that shed light on such as issues
as the true number and cause of civilian casualties in Iraq, human
rights abuses by U.S.-funded contractors and foreign militaries, and
the role that spying and bribes play in international diplomacy.

When
Steve Jobs went Home, He Listened To Vinyl
2012 | February 1 | allthingsd.com
You
know what the biggest problem with music today is? Sound quality.
That’s Neil Young’s take on the issue, anyway. For years, the
musician has been obsessed with improving the way modern music
sounds, sonically speaking.
In an interview with Walt Mossberg and Peter Kafka at our D: Dive
Into Media conference, Young, the perennial music purist, said that
while modern music formats like MP3 are convenient, they sound
lousy.
“Steve Jobs as a
pioneer of digital music, and his legacy is tremendous,” Young said.
“But when he went home, he listened to vinyl. And you’ve got to
believe that if he’d lived long enough, he would have done what I’m
trying to do.”

Listen To A (Probably) New Thirty-Seven Minute Neil Young and Crazy
Horse Jam
2012 | January 28 | rollingstone.com
Neil
Young and Crazy Horse fans, prepare to have your minds blown. This
morning, a new video appeared on Young's website of a thirty-seven
minute Neil Young and Crazy Horse jam session. Unfortunately, the
video merely shows tape rolling back in a studio from many different
angles – but many Neil-ologists on the internet have concluded that
it's newly recorded. The group plays tiny bits of "Fuckin' Up" and a
few other songs in the midst of a crazily long jam, before
transitioning into an epic version of "Cortez The Killer" after
about nineteen minutes.
Sharp-eyed fans will notice lyrics to a handful of previously
unknown songs scattered around the studio, as well as a rubber
chicken and an alligator head. The titles of the songs appear to
read "Oh Susanna," "Love + Wall," "Ontario," "This Land Is Your
Land," "Gallows Tree," "Oh My Darling" and "Clementine." This could
certainly be an old recording, but judging by the sound of Young's
singing voice, it seems to be new. We can't embed the video here, so
check it out on Young's official
website.

Neil Young Recording With Crazy Horse
2012 | January 23 | rollingstone.com
Neil Young is recording a new album with Crazy Horse. Now confirmed
by Rolling Stone: "It's looking good," a representative for Young

audience "erupted in applause" when Young said that he was working

There's word of a
spring release for the album, but don't get your hopes up too high.

Neil Young
Angered By 'Sound Of Music Today'
2012 | January 23 | mtv.com
It's
hard to argue about the digital age of music in terms of efficiency
and portability. When it comes down to cycling through shelves upon
shelves of old CDs versus taking one's entire library of music on
the go in a single handheld device, the choice seems rather clear.
But convenience aside, there is something missing in the digital
translation of tunes — at least there is according to legendary folk
rocker Neil Young, who spoke with MTV News in Park City (where he's
promoting the Slamdance release of his new Jonathan Demme-helmed
documentary "Neil Young Journeys") and expressed his concerns over
the current state of "the sound of music."
"I'm finding that I have a little bit of trouble with the quality of
the sound of music today," Young said. "I don't like it. It just
makes me angry. Not the quality of the music, but we're in the 21st
century and we have the worst sound that we've ever had. It's worse
than a 78 [rpm record]. Where are our geniuses? What happened?"
Young argued that MP3s feature only 5 percent of the data from an
original master file, which he sees as a major problem.

Neil Young's
company sued over warehouse fire sparked by hybrid car
2012 | January 20 | mercurynews.com
The
company founded by rocker Neil Young to convert his one-of-a-kind
LincVolt hybrid electric car is being sued for nearly $500,000 after
the vehicle sparked a fire that seriously damaged two San Carlos
warehouses in 2010, according to a lawsuit.
The suit, filed Tuesday by Unigard Insurance Co., says LincVolt LLC,
which lists Young as an officer, was negligent when it converted the
1959 Lincoln Continental to run on electricity and a biodiesel-powered
generator.
"The altering of a
gas-powered 1959 vehicle and its components is an extreme departure
from what a reasonably careful person would do," Unigard Insurance
Co. claims in the suit filed in San Mateo County Superior Court.
